After 10 years of marriage, Julie and Anthony wanted to do something extra special to celebrate their relationship. They decided to travel to Iceland and have the intimate elopement-style day they craved for their original wedding over a decade ago. Their day included exploring scenic locations around the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, a private vow reading, a DIY picnic, and even an arctic fox sighting! Julie bought an incredible Maggie Sottero gown from Bridal Elegance By Darlene, a dress shop local to her in Albuquerque, NM and it fit right in with the dramatic landscapes we were discovering at every turn.
On the second day of their adventure, they visited Kerlingarfjöll which was otherworldly! Another fun detail about their Icelandic experience is that Litli-Hrútur was erupting and they got to take a helicopter ride over the volcanic eruption!
Why Did the Couple Choose Iceland for Their Vow Renewal?
Julie & Anthony: We wanted to explore somewhere new to celebrate the milestone of 10 years married. Iceland was high on our list of places to visit, and we both envisioned ourselves somewhere with mountains and water.
When we thought about how we wanted to celebrate our 10 year anniversary, we really envisioned it being just the two of us doing one of our absolute favorite things- traveling.
What Makes Iceland Special for Vow Renewals?
Joni, the photographer: What I love about Iceland is how diverse the landscapes are within a short drive. You can pack so many types of incredible scenery within one day, it’s pretty magical!

What Sustainability Considerations Were Made (if any) For This Vow Renewal in Iceland?
Julie & Anthony: We always follow Leave No Trace principles when we’re out in nature. We also try to travel ethically and in a way that’s as environmentally friendly as we can.
Did the Couple Incorporate Any Cultural Aspects of Iceland into Their Vow Renewal?
Julie & Anthony: Our snack board for lunch had some Icelandic foods like kleinur and local cheese (delicious!)
What Was the Couple’s Experience with Having a Vow Renwal in Iceland During July?
Julie & Anthony: The weather was lovely and all roads and locations were open for the Summer.
Joni, the photographer: As a Californian and person who isn’t a big fan of the cold, my personal opinion is to plan for the summer to ensure best chances of nice weather in Iceland. While I understand you are facing more crowds and higher prices, I believe you can still find the calm, quiet privacy you may be craving by staying away from the main attractions.

What Are the Best Tips for Planning a Vow Renewal in Iceland?
Julie & Anthony: Avoid the super popular spots so you can find the off-the-beaten-path locations that are more peaceful.
Joni, the photographer: My main advice for couples eloping in Iceland is to opt for an all day adventure (or maybe even two!) It would be such a shame to come all the way out here, be among the most otherworldly scenery, and not live it to the fullest.
How Did the Couple Personalize Their Day?
Julie & Anthony: We included many different locations that were places we were excited to explore. Some of our favorite memories together are traveling and exploring nature. We also each chose a wax seal and some hand-torn paper to write our vows on, which was a fun little detail. We also really enjoyed picking out snacks for our lunch, which is another thing we love to do when we travel internationally together.
What Challenges Did the Couple Face While Planning Their Vow Renewal in Iceland, and How Did They Overcome Them?
Julie & Anthony: Figuring out how to get my ballgown wedding dress to Iceland was a challenge, but we figured out a way to roll it up and take it in a carryon bag on the plane.
What Advice Would You Give to Others Planning an Vow Renewal in Iceland?
Julie & Anthony: Go big and do the things that you’ve been dreaming of and that excite you! It’s worth the extra effort for sure.
Joni, the photographer: My advice is to focus on your EXPERIENCE and make sure every decision takes that into account first and foremost. Sometimes we get hung up on budget or pleasing others, but what makes it all worth it in the end is getting to experience your dream day — creating the memories you want to make.

What Were the Most Memorable Moments from This Vow Renewal?
Julie & Anthony:Seeing an arctic fox was a huge highlight! Also having a seal appear in the water right before we danced to our original first dance song was really cool. And just being on that beach at midnight with no one else around was so magical.
Why Is Iceland One of the Best Places to Get Married or Have a Vow Renewal in Europe?
Julie & Anthony: The beauty of nature is incredible!
