Senja, the second largest island in Norway. A stunning location for a Winter elopement. With its beautiful mountains, fjords and beaches, it makes for an incredible backdrop to exchange your vows. That is exactly what Christina and Chris did, on a Winters day in November.
What do you love about this location?
Maria, the photographer: I love this location because it’s popular, yet not as crowded as Lofoten, so you get the beauty without the bustle. The hike is generally considered easy, though there are a few steep sections — depending on your experience, you might find it a bit challenging. Still, it’s straightforward with no exposed parts, and the best part is that you don’t need to reach the very top to enjoy an incredible view; even halfway up, it’s absolutely stunning.
What Are Your top tips for planning a destination wedding/elopement in this location?
Maria, the photographer: My top tip for planning a trip here is to think carefully about where you’ll be staying. Senja is a small island and there are accommodations around, but far fewer than in Lofoten, so it’s worth planning ahead. Also, make sure to check that all the roads are open before you go; sometimes tunnels are under construction, and you might suddenly find yourself needing to take a long detour or drive on rougher roads. If you’re taking the ferry, especially in the summer months, get there early. You usually can’t book in advance, and it can get crowded, so arriving early is the best way to make sure you don’t miss it.
It’s also really helpful to work with a local photographer who knows the area well. This region is quite small and remote, so there aren’t big shops or many restaurants nearby. It means you need to come prepared and bring what you might need with you.
Having someone local helps a lot with planning and making sure everything runs smoothly, so you can just relax and enjoy the experience.
When is the best time of day/year to plan a destination wedding/elopement in this location?
Maria, the photographer: The best time of year to visit this place is during summer, when everything is lush and green, the flowers are blooming, and the weather is warm and inviting. Autumn is also beautiful, with all the vibrant fall colors painting the landscape. You can visit in November or early December too, depending on when the snow arrives — November is usually fine, though there might be some snow and ice, so you may need spikes (which I can provide). During the winter months, it’s not really ideal to come here unless you’re planning to ski or do a proper winter tour, as there’s usually a lot of snow and some risk of avalanches. In spring, it becomes possible again depending on how long the snow lasts — sometimes from April or May, and definitely by June.
What advice would you give to others planning a destination wedding/elopement in this location?
Maria: My advice for anyone planning to elope here is to combine your trip to Senja with other parts of Northern Norway. For example, you can visit Senja and also spend some time in Tromsø, or, if you have a rental car and a bit more time, drive all the way down to Lofoten to experience some of the most breathtaking places Norway has to offer. Make sure to book your accommodation in advance as I mentioned before, Senja is quite small and doesn’t have as many options as Lofoten. Also, plan ahead for food; there are some restaurants, but not that many, so it’s a good idea to pick up groceries and bring food for your hikes and picnics.
Since Senja is a smaller and more remote place, you can’t really count on having vendors such as a makeup artist or hairstylist come to you, so most likely you’ll need to do that yourself. The same goes for flowers — you’ll either need to bring them with you from somewhere else or bring dried flowers, which also look beautiful and travel easily.

Maria: Senja is one of the most incredible places to elope — it’s truly stunning. It’s often described as the little brother of Lofoten, with the same dramatic landscapes but without the crowds.
You get breathtaking views, beautiful hikes, and nature that feels raw and untouched. It’s a place where you can really slow down and have those quiet, intimate moments, surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery Norway has to offer.
