Bellwald is a charming mountain village located in the canton of Valais, Switzerland with authentic Swiss charm. Erika and Sander, both from The Netherlands, had been coming here for years before deciding to host their intimate destination wedding with only 16 guests right here.
Why Did the Couple Choose Bellwald for Their Intimate European Wedding?
Erika: This mountain landscape in the stunning Swiss Alps, holds a special place in our hearts and brings us both peace and energy. Bellwald, at 1,600 meters, is a place that feels very familiar to both of us and where we love to spend time together. The Stockalperschloss is a magnificient old castle, with a long and interesting history. All details are so beautifully preserved and was the location for our civil ceremony on the first day.
Can You Get Legally Married in Switzerland?
Erika: Our intimate wedding took place over two days, giving us and the guests tome to relax and enjoy. The first day, we had our civil wedding at the ‘Stockalperschloss’ in Brig. The next day, we held a personal, symbolic ceremony at ‘Alpe Richinen’, an alpine meadow. The ceremony was next to the small chapel ‘Maria zum Schnee’ and a sun-worn wooden cabin.
To have a civil wedding in Switzerland, you need permission through the Swiss embassy or consulate. Be sure to apply at least 10 weeks in advance. Actually, we asked for permission 8 weeks in advance, which was rather tight.

Erika: We advised our guests to travel together to combine transportation like cars.
Did the Couple Incorporate Any Cultural Aspects of Switzerland into Their Wedding?
Erika: The wedding details featured the Swiss national colors, red and white, combined with natural wood elements. The apéros (aperitifs) included local specialties such as Swiss cheeses, dried meat, homemade bread and wine from the region. And of course, an authentic delicious Swiss cheese fondue for dinner.

Erika: April weather in the mountains is unpredictable with sun, snow or mist, but that made it all more special.

Erika: We designed and brought many details ourselves: menu cards, table settings, pocket knives as playful gifts for our guests and Dutch red tulips.

Erika: Being flexible during the planning made everything easier. We did not encounter major challenges. Although the chairlift to go up the mountain might be closed due to the weather forecast. In the end it was beautiful sunny weather.

Erika: We arranged accommodations for our guests, sharing useful tips and travel options. They could plan their trip freely around the wedding and even turn it into a longer stay.

Erika: With dry weather everything could take place outside in nature. The wooden cabin provided a dry, warm cozy space for the apéro, in case of rainy weather.

Erika: Saying our vows during the civil ceremony was an emotional moment for both of us. The relaxed and joyful atmosphere with our small group of guests on the mountain, is a memory we deeply cherish.
Why Is Bellwald One of the Best Places to Get Married in Europe?
Erika: The views of the Valais Alps, the feeling of being surrounded by mountains, yet still easily reachable by public transport and by car. It was all just perfect.
