When you think of winter weddings, most people think of snow-capped mountains or Lapland, but spoiler alert – winter weddings don’t need to be in the snow! Winter weddings in Europe offer an incredible range of experiences. Yes, we have magical snow-covered alpine landscapes, but for those seeking warmer climates, there’s also the sun-soaked Mediterranean too!

Whether you dream of a cozy mountain cabin under the northern lights, or a beach under the winter sun, we’re confident you’ll find the destination in Europe that provides the perfect setting for your destination wedding or winter elopement.

Best Ski Resorts for Winter Weddings

Kitzbühel, Austria

Kitzbühel is perhaps one of the most famous ski resorts, not just in Europe, but worldwide. It’s the home to the Hahnenkamm, the most famous ski race in the world. And that prestige attracts not just top skiers but also the rich and famous too. If you’re looking for luxury hotels and chalets, then Kitzbühel might be your vibe.

Tips for getting married in Kitzbühel:

  • Consider some of the surrounding villages, such as Pass Thurn, Kirchberg or St Joahnn in Tirol for quieter slopes, cheaper accommodation and more great venue options.
  • Avoid the Hahnenkamm race weekend, Christmas & New Year, and the February school holidays, as the slopes are crowded and most accommodation is fully booked.

Zillertal Valley, Austria

The Zillertal Valley in Austria is home to some of Tirol’s best ski resorts, including Mayrhofen, Zell am Ziller, Hintertux and Fügen. The area can be reached win around 1-hour from Innsbruck airport, and 2 hours from Munich, with great public transport connections. It a great winter wedding destination if you’ve got a mix of skiers and non-skiers in your party, as there’s something for everyone here. The region offers a great selection of potential wedding venues, such as the White Lounge Igloo in Mayrhofen and the Kristallhütte in Kaltenbach.

When planning a winter wedding or elopement in Zillertal, and more specifically Mayrhofen, I (Cat, Wild Connections Photography) recommend avoiding the major school holidays as well as the dates around Snowbombing and Altitude Comedy Festival if you want the slopes to be quieter.

Lech am Arlberg, Austria

Victoria, Wild Embrace Photo: The idyllic mountain village Lech am Arlberg is nestled in between beautiful mountains. It is part of the large ski area Ski Arlberg. Due to the great touristic infrastructure, it is easy to plan an adventure-filled day, with activities like heli-skiing, a horse sled ride, toboggan, or a ride with a snowmobile. But the great opportunities for fun winter activities aren’t the only reason Lech is a perfect winter elopement destination. One of the things we love most when it comes to winter elopements in Lech am Arlberg is that the StandesbeamtInnen (officiants) are some of the best we know, they not only make the legal wedding ceremony very personal and beautiful, but they are also flexible and married you even on the mountains, or on the ski slopes.

Not to forget the great accommodations you have in Lech; you will find everything from fancy 5-star hotels to cute cozy chalets up on the mountains that can be a perfect base for your elopement day, as well as a fantastic wedding location if you plan to bring your family and friends.

If you think about a winter elopement in Lech am Arlberg, the best time is December or March – the beginning of April, during the shoulder seasons, you will have the slopes without too many tourists and will find free accommodations even if you plan relatively spontaneous, and there will still most likely be enough snow for all the fun activities.

We always recommend taking one of the gondolas up to the mountains, whether you want to ski down or not. It is an amazing way to get to the most beautiful panorama view without much effort. And look into the evening events; some of the gondolas offer, on some days they run later, gourmet dinners or fondue evenings in the mountain restaurants, and one of our favorite parts is that you can watch the sunset from the mountains.

Zermatt, Switzerland

In my opinion (Malin, Wild Souls United/MA LOVE Photography), as a winter maniac, skier, climber and elopement planner and photographer, Zermatt is the best place to elope in winter if you are after a real adventure!

Zermatt has breathtaking scenery with Matterhorn and all the 4000 peaks that surround the mountain resort. It has plenty of opportunities for adventure, skiing and snowboarding as the obvious and most common choice. But who has dreamed of eloping in an ice cave, in a crevasse or glacier, or maybe even on the top of Matterhorn or in an igloo, with a helicopter on the top of a mountain… or maybe slightly more low key in a mountain chapel in front of Matterhorn with just the nearest.

Zermatt also has a nice mountain hotel worthy of a wedding where you can enjoy stargazing in a jacuzzi and an empty mountain sunrise dance or ceremony.

In Zermatt there is really something for every adventurous couple.

Photographer Nina Reed agrees that Zermatt – Matterhorn is the place for a winter elopement:

Zermatt-Matterhorn is the perfect winter destination for couples who want to combine their elopement with a ski trip—or enjoy a charming mountain town with fine dining, apres ski, and views of the most iconic mountain in all of Europe.

Because Zermatt-Matterhorn is a popular ski destination throughout the whole winter, you should plan on eloping here on a weekday and avoiding any major holidays. If you want sunrise or sunset for your elopement on the slopes, go for December when the days are shorter and the sun lower in the sky. For longer days and better snow conditions, February and March are perfect for feeling like you’re in a winter wonderland.

St. Moritz Switzerland

St. Moritz is one of our (Made in the Mountains Photo‘s) favorite winter elopement destinations if you love the snow. Not only does St. Moritz have some of the most reliable snow in the Alps, but the landscape is breathtaking. In St. Moritz, there are fun winter wedding activities for every kind of adventure. Whether it’s skiing and snowboarding, taking a horse-drawn carriage ride, dog mushing, snowmobiling, or ice skating on a frozen lake, you won’t run out of things to do.

Planning Tips:

  • St. Moritz offers regular snowfall from December to April, with January and February being the best for bluebird days.
  • St. Moritz is far away from major cities, so plan your elopement 3–5+ months ahead to secure limited local vendors like hair and makeup artists.

Top Alpine Destinations (Also for Non-Skiers)

Bregenzerwald, Austria

Victoria, Wild Embrace Photo: Bregenzerwald is a beautiful valley in the western part of Austria. Located between Tyrol and Switzerland, it offers beautiful mountains and lovely valleys with waterfalls, and its closeness to the Lake of Constance makes the activity opportunities almost endless. Despite the beautiful landscape and various cultural highlights, it is still somehow an insider tip that makes it the perfect elopement destination for everyone who looks for a location off the beaten track.

You will find great ski areas, beautiful winter hiking trails, fun toboggan runs, quiet winter forests, and beautiful ski touring and snowshoeing opportunities that bring you to places where you are the only ones in the middle of the snowy landscape.

If you want to be in the snow, we recommend staying in one of the villages higher up, like Damüls or Schröcken. They are known for winters rich in snow and are a great base for many fun activities. The local tourist offices offer culinary hikes, which could also be a great opportunity for your elopement day. You follow a winter hiking trail from mountain restaurant to mountain restaurant. You will get another course at every stop, and in-between, you will be awarded with stunning views of the winter panorama.

Val Gardena, Dolomites, Italy

Val Gardena is pure magic for a winter elopement. Imagine saying your vows surrounded by the dramatic, snow-dusted peaks of the Dolomites.

While the Dolomites offer world-class skiing, they are also a great destination for non-skiers too. There are countless outdoor activities to enjoy, including winter hiking and snowshoeing, tobogganing, ice climbing and cross-country skiing.

And for those who like to enjoy something a bit warmer and cosier, why not enjoy a traditional lunch in a mountain hut or have a spa day at one of Val Gardena’s many wellness hotels.

Planning Tips:

  • Avoid high season dates, such as Christmas & New Year, Carnival, Easter and the FIS Alpine World Cup race weekends.
  • Choose a location outside of one of the ski areas if you’re looking for a more private experience
  • Work with local vendors to help you understand which locations are easily accessible and suitable during the ski season (as it’s different to summer).

Neuschwanstein Castle, Füssen, Germany

If you’re dreaming of a winter fairytale wedding, nothing will top Neuschwanstein. This real-life Disney castle was the inspiration for Sleeping Beauty and when you see it, it’s very clear why. While it’s not possible to get married at Neuschwanstein castle itself, it is possible to have a wedding in the nearby town of Füssen, and have pictures with this magnificent castle in the background.

Val Susa, Western Italian Alps

Way less crowded than the Dolomites, the Western Italian Alps still offer great mountain scenery and some accessibility in winter as well. Some of the roads in the most beautiful inner valleys of Val Susa, for example, are still accessible by foot in the winter (with proper mountain boots), and the surrounding mountains provide for a beautiful 360 degree  backdrop. If you feel more adventurous, there are several snowshoe trails that will allow you to be completely surrounded by snowy forests and rocky peaks. The only sound you will hear during the hike is the one of your steps on the snow, the dropping of melted snow from the tree branches, and the birds in the forest.

Tips:

  • Wear proper gear (mountain boots and sunglasses are essentials, thermal leggings under the wedding dress are highly advised!) and bring extra layers: If it is very cold, you can temporarily remove a jacket, a jumper or a blanket  when there is a spectacular photo opportunity and then quickly put them back!
  • If you are thinking of a snowshoe hike, double check the weather conditions and the risk of avalanches (there is a daily bulletin for that).
  • Warm up again with an Italian thick chocolate (possibly with whipped cream!) in one of the mountain huts open in the winter season.

Oberstdorf, Germany

Why it’s great, according to Christine from Made in the Mountains Photo: Oberstdorf, Germany is a stunning wintertime elopement location in the Alps. It offers a small town atmosphere, snowy landscapes, and plenty of activities, even for non-skiers. In December, you can head to the Christmas markets, in January and February, you’ll find outdoor weekend concerts to cozy up at with a mug of mulled wine, and any day in winter you can enjoy walking along the town’s groomed winter paths. If you want to get your heart pumping, taking a cable car up one of the local mountains. Then, you can ride down into the valley via one of the many toboggan runs in the area.

Planning Tips:

  • To take advantage of everything Oberstdorf has to offer, plan your trip from mid-December through February
  • Oberstdorf has a lot of unique accommodation options, so don’t overlook something fun for your elopement like a stay at Chalets Alpglück

Nordic Winter Wonderland Destinations

Levi, Finland

It doesn’t get much more winter wonderland vibes than Lapland. This region above the arctic circle offers lovers of all things winter a dream wedding destination. Levi is perhaps one of the easiest destinations to reach in Finnish Lapland, with Kittilä just an hour away.

Once you’re here, there are so many winter activities to enjoy. For animal lovers, perhaps a reindeer safari or dog-sledding adventure is the perfect elopement excursion. Or for those who love a bit more adrenaline, you’ve got snowmobiling and skiing too.

Ice Hotel, Sweden

The Ice Hotel in Jukkasjarvi, Sweden, is a stunning and unique winter elopement location. This hotel is made entirely out of ice and snow, providing a magical and romantic atmosphere for your special day. The chapel provides a beautiful backdrop for exchanging your vows, and the hotel offers a variety of accommodations, including luxurious suites and rustic ice rooms. The Ice Hotel is located in the rugged beauty of Sweden’s winter landscape, providing endless opportunities for stunning photos. A stay at the Ice Hotel is a magical, lifetime experience for any couple who elopes there.

Weddings under the Northern Lights

Alta, Norway

I, Tanja, might be a little partial, but I truly believe Alta (my hometown) is the ultimate destination for a Northern Lights elopement. Unlike other coastal locations, Alta’s winters are relatively mild. Although the temperatures can drop, the lack of strong winds and high humidity usually make it more comfortable.

A Northern Lights elopement is about more than just the auroras. Alta offers incredible daytime winter adventures like dog sledding, reindeer sledding, and overnight stays in an igloo hotel. It also retains the cozy charm of a small Norwegian town, making it less crowded compared to places like Tromsø.

Other fantastic spots for a Northern Lights elopement include Tromsø, the Lyngen Alps, Senja, and Lofoten.

Lofoten, Norway

From photographer Nina Reed: The Lofoten Islands in Norway are beautiful all year-round, but it’s an extra special place to elope in winter when the tourism is slower and you can get great deals on lodging and activities. The biggest draw to eloping in Lofoten in winter is of course the northern lights, and the soft winter light and endless blue hours makes it a photographer’s dream.

The weather is unpredictable in winter, and storms are common, especially at the start of winter in November. From early December through early January, the sun never rises above the horizon, so you might want to avoid this time for an elopement unless your photographer is incredibly skilled in low light. The best months for a winter elopement in Lofoten are February and March, when the days are getting longer again, the snowpack is more stable and safe for winter hikes (and ski tours), and the weather tends to be more cold and crisp than stormy.

If you’re traveling to Lofoten in winter for your elopement, always give yourself more time than you think you need for getting there and back again. Both the ferry and propeller planes from Bodø to Lofoten are often delayed during storms. But if you’re willing to be flexible and deal with whatever weather northern Norway decided to bring, Lofoten is an incredible place to experience winter, see the northern lights, and of course elope!

Winter Sun Wedding Destinations in Europe

Amalfi Coast, Italy

The Amalfi Coast is undeniably one of Italy’s most enchanting destinations. While its beauty draws countless visitors during the Summer, we (Benni & Carol) often find ourselves avoiding the peak season, opting instead to go there in Winter.

Experiencing the Amalfi Coast in Winter is like stepping into a different world. The chaos and heat of Summer dissipate, leaving behind a tranquil atmosphere and breathtaking views that showcase the true gem this region is.

When planning a Winter elopement on the Amalfi Coast, there are a few important things to keep in mind:

  • While the coast is much less crowded during this time, many businesses may close for the Winter, either for renovations or to rejuvenate after the bustling Summer months. Therefore, it’s wise to plan ahead and check availability.
  • You can expect some beautiful sunny days; however, it can also be a bit rainy and chilly, so be sure to pack a few layers, especially if you’re considering a visit to the stunning town of Ravello.
  • Although boat tours are not available, you can still explore the coast by car—why not in a vintage Italian vehicle like a Fiat 500? This allows you to stop at iconic spots and fully enjoy the beauty of the surroundings in peaceful intimacy, free from the Summer crowds.

Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, Spain

Fuerteventura is such an incredible place to elope! It’s one of the Canary Islands (there are seven in total). We (Katja Koller) have explored Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, and Tenerife in our van, and we got to know some incredible spots and people along the way. So when we say we know this place first-hand, we really mean it. Fuerteventura lies at the same latitude as Africa but remains a part of Spain. The best part? The weather is amazing all year round—think 18–30°C (64–86°F)—even in the middle of winter.

This island seriously has it all. Gorgeous white-sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise water, adorable little towns, delicious Spanish tapas, and these insane sand dunes that feel like you’re on another planet. Whether you’re into surfing, swimming, or just chilling on a quiet beach, Fuerteventura has something for everyone. Oh, and the sunsets? They’ll blow your mind. And after that, you can watch the stars come out and soak up those magical nighttime vibes—what better way to end your elopement day?

Top Tips for winter elopements in Fuerteventura:

  1. Bring layers! Even though the days are warm, evenings can get a little chilly, especially if you’re stargazing by the beach.
  2. Plan your timeline around sunset—it happens earlier in winter, so make sure you’ve got plenty of time to enjoy that golden hour glow and relax afterward.

Ireland

Shauna of Wild and Green Photography highly recommends Ireland for a winter wedding. Not a sun destination but definitely a gorgeous one!

Why it’s great for winter:

As Winter in Ireland is low season for tourists, you can often enjoy the most popular places all by yourselves. Ireland is full of castles, abbeys and old ruins that can keep you sheltered from the Winter weather. Irish Traditional Pubs with open fires have great atmosphere in Winter and are a perfect way to celebrate after your ceremony.

A couple of tips for planning a winter wedding in Ireland:

There are much less hours of daylight in Winter than in the Summer. You’ll need to work with your photographer to ensure you have your timeline organized to start early to make the most of the day. Pack lots of cosy layers to keep warm on your adventure!

Things to consider when planning a winter wedding

Daylight Hours

One of the biggest wedding planning challenges for winter weddings is the reduced daylight hours. The further north you go, the shorter the days become, especially between November and February.

This is important when planning your wedding day timeline. Talk with your local photographer about how to plan your itinerary so that you’re making the most of the daylight hours.

Warmth

This might seem like an obvious one, but don’t underestimate the cold. If you’re planning a wedding in the snow, making sure that you have lots of layers of warm clothing, and adequate time to warm up in-between activities is essential, not just for your enjoyment, but also your safetly.

But it’s not only snowy destinations where you’ll want to think about warmth. While destinations further south may offer much warmer temperatures, don’t overlook the fact that evenings will still be much cooler. If you’re planning an open-air ceremony or reception, make sure you inform your guests to dress appropriately.

Off-Season Closures

While winter ski resorts and Nordic destinations might thrive on winter tourism, many warmer European destinations may be a lot quieter during the winter months, as this may be their “off-season”. There are certainly benefits to this. Locations are quieter and accommodation is cheaper. But you may also find that there are fewer options, as it might be that some hotels, restaurants, etc take a break and close over the winter. So make sure to do your research (or work with local vendors who can advise you on what it’s like there in winter).
