The Faroe Islands are a remote and breathtaking archipelago located between Iceland and Norway in the North Atlantic Ocean. Known for their dramatic landscapes, rolling green hills, steep sea cliffs, rugged coastlines and charming grass-roofed houses, the islands offer a raw and untouched beauty that’s perfect for a truly unique engagement session.

How was the location for this engagement session chosen?
Chris, the photographer: I host photo tours on the Faroe Islands for photography beginners and pros who love nordic landscapes. The location I chose were in the area of the couples’ accommodation. A mountain near their village with remarkable views that I knew from one of my trips.
Do you require any special permits or permission from landowners to take photos here?
Chris, the photographer: Not in the areas where we shot. There are a lot of remarkable spots on the Faroe Islands and a bunch of them are on privat land where you need permits / permission from the landowners. Basically all location were free a couple of years ago but Instagram made it bad so some locations are shut down because of influencers destroying nature and not respecting property. Most of the spots on the Faroe Islands are free to access or can be entered after paying a small fee.
How easy is the location to access? Is it suitable for all ages and abilities?
Chris: The hardest location to access was the mountain at the end. There is a unpleasant road to a car park on the mountain ridge, but you still have to walk up the mountain with some steep parts for around 30 min. Doable but, medium difficult level. Also often slippery and muddy after rain.

Why should couples consider having a photoshoot in this location/area?
Chris: Two words: remarkable views. It’s hard to not find a dramatic spot around each corner on the Faroe Islands, but Klaksvík with Mount Klakkur guarantuees breathtaking views on the surrounding islands. It’s moderately easy to access and you can have a deserved meal/coffee in town afterwards.
What are your top tips for planning a shoot in this area?
Chris: Klaksvík is a good home base for activities in the northern parts of the archipelago. Big enough to provide you with everything you need and great to roam around some iconic landscape spots. For a shoot on Mount Klakkur, it’s mandatory to check weather reports and be prepared for some slippery paths after and during rain. Weather can change a lot in the archipelago and a lot of trails on the Faroe Islands are not secured – once you start sliding down a slope the next exit is often the ocean. So don’t do brave things on the Faroes, get good hiking boots (profile!!) and enjoy a hot soup in town afterwards.
Is there a best time of year to visit this location?
Chris: When it comes to weather, the Faroe Islands is like Iceland. It’s possible to have 4 seasons during one day – or 4 different valleys. In summer it’s more chilled, in spring and autumn there can be harsh winds (especially on the west, where the islands are exposed to the open Atlantic ocean), lots of rain and snow. You don’t chose the Faroes for a sunny summer light and airy beach wedding, you chose the Faroes if you are in dramatic skies, rough nature and a lot of wind. Then you will be rewarded with the most incredible views, experience and memories. My favourite is always autumn.
Any other advice or tips you would like to share based on your experience?
Chris: If you plan to elope on the Faroe Islands, don’t hop in and out. Book one or two home bases, roam around, have warm clothes and good shoes and take your time because of weather changes.
