Meet Roma Elizabeth

Tell us your story

I am Roma. Nostalgic for 90s skater music, pirate boot-wearing geek with a camera.

I’m a fine art photographer for the adventurous and the romantic, and my base in Scotland suits this style perfectly with the Outlander-style scenery of Lochs and mountains right on my doorstep. I have been described as an ‘artistic’ photographer by others, and this probably sums up my work quite well.

With over 15 years of experience in the wedding industry, and the honor of capturing over 390 weddings, 80 family and baby photoshoots, I appreciate the priceless value of these moments. From the flower girls and page boys racing around during bridal prep, parents crying during the ceremonies, and grandparents showing off their best moves on your dance floor, I love to get right in amongst it all.

I nearly didn’t become a photographer. At 20, I graduated with a degree in fashion design from the prestigious Textiles School, and the dream was to work for Vogue. However, after sweating through a screening of The Devil Wears Prada, I knew the fashion world was not for me. I don’t follow others, I like to walk to the beat of my own drum, and I value people, friendships, love, laughter and a sense of humour over materialistic stuff. Plus, I don’t give a crap about fashion. I am more influenced by clothes in movies than Vogue. Give me pirates, Moulin Rouge corsetry, fantasy looks over stuffy fashion any day.

I was constantly rebelling against the industry. I would lose marks for refusing to make my illustrations stick thin. Instead, I would draw my models with superwoman-style curves inspired by my favourite comic book artist. This led to many stand-offs with my tutors as I would point-blank refuse to draw my models without womanly curves.

For me, life is about the people we love, not the things we own. Family, connection, and shared moments mean far more than anything material.

That’s why, as a wedding photographer, I focus on capturing images that hold real emotion, the laughter. the hugs from teary-eyed grandparents, the first look with parents, the laughter of the kids enjoying the day, your mates drunkenly singing and dancing with you on that dance floor like you’re 18 again, the joy of just all being together. These are the memories that last. The photographs I create are made to be treasured, to hang on your walls and make you smile for years, even decades, to come.

My previous jobs have included bridal dress buyer and assistant manager in an award-winning bridal boutique. This has come in useful when you need help with that corset in your dress, as everyone else has forgotten how to do it. I’ve also had to drop the cameras and stitch brides’ dresses on the day. In my spare time, I also work as an SA with the occasional time travelling in a well-known show filmed in Scotland

How long have you been working in the wedding industry?

Over 17 years in the wedding industry and 16 years as a photographer.

What made you get into weddings & elopements?

I used to create fantasy and bridal photoshoots, and a make-up artist was keen to book me for her wedding. It snowballed from there!

What do you love about intimate weddings and elopements?

What I love most about elopements is how much we smile and laugh at the crazy rain and wind, creating some dramatic images if Scotland decides to show off with its usual rain and drama. I love the freedom of elopements and the intimacy around them. Our scenery here is what makes it magical, and with elopements, we get to embrace it and have so much freedom.

How would you describe your approach to your work?

Calm and relaxed

What’s your favourite part of a wedding day?

Its hard to pick one. I love parents seeing the couple all dressed up. I love first looks with the couple too.

I love the freedom of elopements and the intimacy around them. Our scenery here is what makes it magical, and with elopements, we get to embrace it and have so much freedom.

What advice would you give couples who are in the process of planning a wedding or elopement?

Do things your way, don’t worry about trying to keep tradition or trying to keep everyone happy (impossible!).

Also, the day goes by so so fast, so try not to cram too much in (aka lots of locations).

When you’re not at a wedding, what do you love doing?

I love being with my kids and husband, so if I am not working, I will always be with them. I am also a qualified  OT, so I enjoy this part of my career too.

Do you have a dream wedding or elopement you’d love to do?

My dream weddings and elopements are rarely based around the venue or location, but the couples. I love couples who are relaxed, have a great sense of humour, and have similar values to me. Family means more than materialistic things, and they want to spend their day with their loved ones or in a place they adore, and that means something to them. Whether that’s just the two of them and a few witnesses, or a huge gathering, what matters most is they do it their way and not for others or social media. Those are my dream weddings.
