Jeanette & Julian’s elopement took place at Lake Kleifarvatn, a secluded and mystical lake on the Reykjanes Peninsula. Despite the unpredictable Icelandic September weather, the ceremony remained dry, and the sun even made a surprise appearance just as they exchanged their vows.
After a heartfelt ceremony that included Viking-inspired rituals such as handfasting and drinking from a horn, led by a humanist celebrant, they explored three stunning nearby locations. A truly touching and relaxed elopement including their son.
Why Did the Couple Choose Iceland for Their Elopement?
Jeanette & Julian: I (Jeanette) visited Iceland for the first time in 2021 and stayed for three weeks. I instantly fell in love with the country – in the same year I met my husband. While I was travelling, we were right in the middle of getting to know each other, and he shared a lot of the experience with me from afar.
When we decided to get married this year, the idea of Iceland actually came from my husband. Even though he had never been there before, he loved the thought of getting married in a place that meant so much to me.
What Makes Kleifarvatn in Iceland Special for Elopements?
Jeanette & Julian: Together with Andreea and Matthias, we explored several locations. This one, with its volcanic landscape, instantly spoke to us and felt absolutely right. The location is thankfully not overcrowded with tourists yet, making it perfect for a quiet, intimate and meaningful ceremony.
Andreea, the photographer/planner: I love how the otherworldly landscapes, shaped by ancient lava, create a dramatic and ever-changing backdrop. The scenic drive offers breathtaking views and the diverse terrains provide endless opportunities for exploration and unique photography angles.
Can You Get Legally Married in Iceland?
Yes, you can.
Jeanette & Julian: We had a symbolic ceremony – and it couldn’t have been more perfect.

What Sustainability Considerations Were Made (if any) For This Elopement in Iceland?
Jeanette & Julian: Nature is very important to us, which is why we chose an outdoor symbolic ceremony. Besides that, we didn’t have specific sustainability considerations.
Did the Couple Incorporate Any Cultural Aspects of Iceland into Their Elopement?
Jeanette & Julian: Our celebrant, Erla, told us during the ceremony that the 16th of September is celebrated in Iceland as “Icelandic Nature Day”, which made our wedding in the middle of nature even more special.
We incorporated traditions like handfasting and drinking from the horn. With the Icelandic toast “Skál”, we raised a drink to the past, present and future.
What Was the Couple’s Experience with Getting Married in Iceland During September?
Jeanette & Julian: September in Iceland can be quite unpredictable in terms of weather. We had a bit of sunshine in the morning, and later it turned more overcast – but that is exactly how I always imagined Iceland’s weather to be.
For us, it was perfect: the slightly dramatic atmosphere made the photos feel much more powerful and true to Iceland than bright blue skies and sunshine ever could.

What Are the Best Tips for Planning an Elopement in Iceland?
Jeanette & Julian: If you’re not from Iceland, we would definitely recommend having someone by your side who can support you with the planning and all the required documents. We were so lucky to find Andreea & Matthias (loversofthenorth), who not only captured beautiful images but supported us through absolutely everything.
Andreea, the photographer/planner: The wind can be quite strong here, especially in winter when it feels icy cold. It really helps to understand how the wind moves through the landscape. Knowing where to find sheltered spots can make a huge difference for comfort and photos. Layers, warm drinks and flexibility with timing are key (always in Iceland). The light around the lake changes quickly, so keep your schedule open to catch those magical moments.
How Did the Couple Personalize Their Elopement?
Jeanette & Julian: Since we travelled with our 1.5-year-old son Lio, we started the day calmly and without stress. After a relaxed breakfast, I (Jeanette) even made waffles for everyone. Then the stylist arrived, followed by Andreea and Matthias.
Matthias took wonderful care of Lio and the two bonded quickly.
We then drove about an hour to the location, had our beautiful ceremony, followed by the photoshoot – and suddenly the day felt like it flew by.
In the evening we had dinner together as newlyweds, put Lio to bed, and shared our first dance on the terrace.
Later, we enjoyed a bottle of wine in the hot tub – and the highlight was seeing our very first Northern Lights, which became stronger each night.
What Challenges Did the Couple Face While Planning Their Elopement in Iceland, and How Did They Overcome Them?
Jeanette & Julian: Initially, we thought organising the required documents would be easier – but bureaucracy proved us wrong. We were extremely grateful to have Andreea & Matthias supporting us throughout the entire process, making sure everything was ready in time.
What Advice Would You Give to Others Planning an Elopement in Iceland?
Jeanette & Julian: having reliable support on site is invaluable.
Andreea, the photographer/planner: First, always check road conditions and weather forecasts in advance. The Reykjanes Peninsula can be unpredictable, with sudden changes in temperature, rain and strong winds—even in summer. Layered clothing, waterproof jackets and sturdy footwear are essential. Keep an eye on wind and sun position when planning your ceremony and photoshoot, as both can greatly affect comfort, safety, and lighting for your images.
If you want a legally binding ceremony, you’ll need an officiant, so arranging this ahead of time is crucial. Hiring a local wedding photographer and planner experienced with Icelandic terrain can make your day smoother and less stressful. They can handle logistics, help with paper work and find the perfect spots for your photos.

What Were the Most Memorable Moments from This Elopement?
Jeanette & Julian: One of the most meaningful moments was sharing our wedding day with our son.
The “First Look”, beautifully captured by Andreea, was incredibly emotional.
So was reading our vows to each other and the entire ceremony itself.
And of course, witnessing the Northern Lights for the first time – absolutely unforgettable.
Why Is Iceland One of the Best Places to Get Married in Europe?
Jeanette & Julian: Iceland, the land of fire and ice, offers countless unique places for a truly extraordinary wedding.
Our chosen spot had so much energy, as recent volcanic eruptions had taken place there – you could genuinely feel it.
Our friends and family were amazed when they saw the photos and told us how special and incomparable everything looked.
Is there anything Else You’d Like to Share:
Jeanette & Julian: Listen to your heart and stay true to what you want. If you dream of a wedding that is just about the two of you, then take that step – don’t make decisions based on what society, friends or family might expect.
We chose to celebrate our wedding day alone because we had heard from so many couples who had big weddings and ended up feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or unable to truly enjoy the day. For us, travelling to Iceland a few days before the wedding – and staying a few days afterwards – allowed us to experience everything calmly, intentionally and without pressure.
Next year, we’ll celebrate our first wedding anniversary together with our friends and family. For us, it was the perfect combination – and it’s something we would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone.
