In the heart of Crete, amidst the olive groves of Heraklion, Mikael and Dorine gathered with their loved ones to celebrate a love that had crossed borders and blended cultures. Mikael, with his roots in both Crete and Sweden, always felt at home under the Mediterranean sun, surrounded by the olive trees that had been in his family for generations. Dorine, hailing from the Netherlands, was captivated by the beauty of Crete when Mikael first brought her to his ancestral home.

As they stood beneath the leaves of the olive grove at Ktima Panagiotaki, the warm Cretan breeze carrying whispers of the past and promises of the future, they exchanged vows. Surrounded by the fragrant scent of wild herbs and the setting sun casting golden light over the hills, they pledged their hearts to one another.

Their love was a bridge between two lands, two cultures, and two souls destined to find each other. Heraklion in Crete, with its timeless beauty and history, became not just the backdrop of their wedding, but the place where their two worlds became one.

How did you choose the location?

From Elle, the planner: My concept centers around a wedding set in the natural and rural landscapes of Crete, so I suggested various similar venues to the couple. They chose this location and instantly fell in love with it during their first visit. It’s a truly magical spot, nestled among olive groves, near a charming chapel, with stunning sea views. The location is just 25 minutes away from the center of Heraklion.

Do you require any special permits or permission from landowners to get married or have a photoshoot at Ktima Panagiotaki?

This place is owned by the church, which allows permission for weddings or photoshoots to take place there.

Can you have a legal ceremony here, or just symbolic?

At this specific location, a symbolic ceremony can be held, while just a few meters away stands a chapel where a legal ceremony can take place for Christian Orthodox couples.

How easy is Ktima Panagiotaki to access? Is it suitable for all ages and abilities?

The road leading to the location is narrow and paved with cement, but it’s easily accessible. Also there is a nearby rural parking area where guests can park their cars, as well as a few mini buses. The site is accessible and suitable for people of all ages and abilities.

Was sustainability something that was considered during planning and what considerations are particularly important in Crete?

Yes, sustainability is at the heart of my concept. I aim to connect couples with the natural beauty of Crete by incorporating environmentally friendly practices whenever possible.

In this area, the most important sustainability considerations include minimizing environmental impact by using local and seasonal flowers, minimizing waste, and avoiding electricity and single-use items. We also prioritize working with local vendors to support the community and reduce the carbon footprint associated with transportation. Preserving the natural beauty of the location is key, so we focus on low-impact setups that respect the surroundings.

Leave No Trace principles are crucial in this area to preserve its natural beauty. Key considerations include ensuring that all decorations and materials brought to the site are removed afterward, avoiding any damage to the olive groves and native plants, and properly disposing of any waste. We also encourage guests to stay on designated paths to prevent soil erosion and to respect the local rural area.

What are your top tips for planning an intimate wedding or elopement in Crete?

From Elle, the planner:

Keep it Simple:Emphasize the beauty of nature; any ceremony can be magical. Aim for an intimate and elegant celebration set against stunning scenery, where the natural surroundings seamlessly complement each decoration.

Choose the Right Season: The best times for an outdoor ceremony in Crete are from May to the end of October when the weather is sunny, pleasant, and nature is at its most vibrant.

Embrace Local Culture: Incorporate local traditions, products and customs into the ceremony for a more authentic experience.

Prioritize Sustainability: Embrace eco-friendly options like using minimal decorations, avoiding single-use plastics, and ensuring that everything you bring in is taken out afterward.

Scout Locations: Visit potential sites in nature ahead of time to find the perfect spot for the couple. Look for scenic views, lush olive groves, artistic vineyards, local wineries, and more rural places.

Work with Local Vendors: Collaborate with local vendors for flowers, catering, and photography. They know the area well and can help create an authentic Cretan experience while supporting the community.

Did the couple include any local Customs in their wedding?

The groom is originally from Greece but was born and raised in Sweden. He currently resides in Amsterdam with his wife. They chose to have a symbolic wedding in his home country, incorporating some elements from a Greek Orthodox wedding, such as the Processional.

Processional

The ceremony typically begins with a procession, where the couple and their families enter the church, often accompanied by traditional music. In this case, the groom entered the ceremony with a local band from Crete.

Crowning (Stefana):

The couple is crowned with ornate crowns made of flowers, symbolizing their unity and the glory of their marriage.

Ceremony of the Rings:

The couple exchanges wedding rings three times, symbolizing their unity and commitment.

Rice Throwing:

Guests throw rice or petals at the couple as they exit the ceremony, representing fertility, prosperity, and good fortune.
