Devon and Kholton travelled from the United States to get married at Langley Castle. They had planned and elopement at the Castle, however it felt a bit sad that their close family would be left out from their amazing day. So they decided to invite a few close family members and having their parents be there with them, made it even more special and emotional.
The bride, Devon, is a talented hobby historical dress maker and actually made her gorgeous wedding gown herself!
What makes Langley castle an ideal destination for an elopement or micro-wedding?
From Devon, the bride: An international elopement is a hectic event to plan for any couple. But, the moment you step into Hexham, you’re greeted with small town, rural charm. Our stress dissolved as we entered Langley’s peaceful grounds. All of our guests soon discovered the tranquil walking paths through sheep farms surrounding the castle. It was a very grounding place to settle in and get married.
What Made you choose Langley Castle for your Wedding?
From Devon, the bride: We chose England to connect to our ancestry and enhance the significance of our traditional Anglican ceremony. The castle elevated our ceremony with its rich with history and culture. Langley was also an inviting location given its moderate size—enough room for a micro wedding without feeling swallowed up by an estate. After choosing the venue, we found local vendors through Instagram.
Can you get legally married at Langley castle? How easy is it for international couples? Do you know anything about the process?
Langley’s staff was incredibly knowledgeable about the process of international weddings. Their expertise as well as personal research helped us understand we could get legally married in England as Americans, but there would be some thorough paperwork involved.
We chose to get legally married in the US before our ceremony, but you can have a legal ceremony at the castle with the correct paperwork registered.
Is there also accommodation on site? What about catering?
Langley has a fine dining restaurant on-site with a beautiful private dining area for micro weddings. In a room surrounded by windows that looked up at the sunset, our guests enjoyed a multi-course meal with options to suit everyone’s taste. The venue also offered post-ceremony drinks and hors d’oeuvres.
Can you tell us a bit more about making your own dress?
From Devon: I learned to sew in 2020 as a quarantine hobby, and began sewing historically accurate clothing from different centuries. I never thought I would be the type to sew my own wedding dress, but when I saw that I could create a couture level gown with only about $700 spent on fabric, I thought I would give it a try!
I never tried on any dresses. I knew I wanted something timeless and historic to match the castle vibes at Langley Castle.
My whole sewing journey is documented on my sewing account @sewveryhistorical! It probably took around 1000 hours of sewing, as I employed many couture techniques, like hand finishing all the seams by hand with tiny whip stitches, sewing 60 buttons from scratch, and hand sewing the 27-foot-long hem.
