Dan & Frances travelled from the US to get married in Scotland. Not only did they want to get married in an ancient castle, but they decided to fully embrace the history of the venue and opted for a medieval-themed wedding. From their and their guests’ outfits to the jewellery, stamps, and the church and with a barn owl as their ring bearer, their theme truly came alive.
The photos show the beauty and mystical features of the locations and the mix of cultures was represented in the ceremony. At the castle, they celebrated with their closest loved ones with food from an Italian private chef who lives in Scotland. Kilmartin Castle has been rewarded by the New York Times as the 4th best place in the world to visit.
Kilmartin Castle is a historic castle located in the village of Kilmartin in Argyll and Bute, Scotland and was built in 1550 by the local Clan Campbell, a prominent Scottish clan. Visiting here blends historical ambience with the beauty of the Scottish countryside
Why choose Kilmartin Castle?
From Evelyn: The couple choose the location because of the groom’s big interest in Scotland and its history. I also know that they spent quite a lot of time searching for the place that felt like their place!
One of the reasons they chose Kilmartin Castle, was the ability to have exclusive use of the whole venue for 3 days.
It’s also a short and easy drive from the city of Glasgow.
Legal wedding ceremonies at Kilmartin Castle
It’s possible to get legally married in Kilmartin Castle. For couples who aren’t from the UK, the paperwork is relatively straightforward too.
The ceremony can take place inside the castle, or outside in the grounds. It’s also possible to have your ceremony elsewhere if you choose and to rent the castle for accommodation and dinner.
What Sustainability Considerations are there for Weddings at Kilmartin Castle?
From Evelyn: Sustainability is important to the castle owners, and you can see that in everything they do. They buy their produce from local producers who also support their sustainable vision, and their gardens have been landscaped with nature and biodiversity as a priority. If you book your wedding through them, they will connect you with local vendors to help support the local wedding community.
Do you have any tips for eloping in this area?
From Evelyn: Make sure you contact the castle owners to get help regarding the paperwork. And also the church and the falconery directly for info needed regarding all necessities. Also make sure you have the correct info from your own country regarding the legality of getting married in Scotland. There is a possibility to make renewal of vows as well both in the church and/or at the case.
Make sure to take the time to be there for a few days or make a road trip to Loch Lomond, Glasgow and Glencoe.
