The Merewood Country Hotel is located in the picturesque Lake District in the UK, a region renowned for its stunning natural beauty. Nestled amidst lush woodlands and offering breathtaking views of Lake Windermere, the hotel provides a tranquil and scenic setting for visitors. The Lake District itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its rugged fells, serene lakes, and charming villages. A perfect location for a beautiful elopement!

From Hannah, the photographer: This elopement sticks in my mind because the weather pulled it out of the bag. I remember standing in the library at Merewood before the ceremony watching the clouds roll over the hills down to the lake and pondering if I had spare brolly in the car…

Well I needn’t have worried because as the ceremony started, the sun came out and by the time we’d driven a short distance down to the lake, the light was that perfect winter light we always dream of but seldom seem to get. We had the jetties to ourselves, bar a lovely elderly couple who just sat and watched us and marvelled at the weather too. Chloe and Chris are the sweetest pair and I loved the calmness of their day.

Can you tell us a bit about the location?

From Hannah:

Chloe & Chris chose to marry at Merewood Country House Hotel near Windermere in the Lake District. Merewood has gorgeous grounds but doesn’t have its own lake access so we headed to Miller Ground for portraits which is a short drive away. In the summer this location can be very busy but I knew that it would likely be quiet as it was quite a chilly November afternoon and as it happens there was just one elderly couple enjoying the view when we arrived!

Merewood Country House Hotel is licensed for civil ceremonies and the Ground has good parking and the jetties are easily accessible.

Do you have any elopement Planning tips for this area?

From Hannah: Easily accessible locations in the Lake District get particularly busy in the summer. Portraits at locations like Miller Ground aren’t impossible but couples who choose to elope in the summer might find it quite overwhelming to have such an audience. During the winter months it’s much quieter and you can often have the place to yourselves.

About the couple

Chloe & Chris met online.

They decided to elope as they didn’t like being the centre of attention and wanted their wedding day to be about the two of them.

Any other tips or advice you’d like to share?

From Hannah: Booking a local photographer who knows the area can really help you get the best out of planning your elopement, not just in terms of knowing great locations but also accessibility, permissibility and busy times and of course excellent supplier recommendations.
