Palacio Helguera is a beautiful boutique hotel and historic palace located in Cantabria, Spain. This 17th-century palace was recently restored and transformed into a luxurious retreat that blends its rich history with modern elegance.

The property is surrounded by lush gardens and countryside, offering a peaceful, secluded atmosphere. An incredible location for a wedding!

How did they choose Palacio Helguera?

The couple looked through social media and visited the Palace. They were looking for a historical and green space.
If you want to go here just for a photo shoot, you can, but you do need to book it in advance.

Can you have a legal ceremony at Palacio Helguera?

You can organize the ceremony separately from the reception, as there is plenty of space on the property. There is also a beautiful church just 5 minutes away from the palace, featuring a classic Spanish and European style.

How easy is Palacio Helguera to access?

Palacio Helguera is accessible by car, and taxis can also take you there. It’s at the top of a hill with beautiful views. The venue is suitable for all ages— the couple even had a baby, and the palace provided a crib.

Was sustainability something that was considered during planning?

The couple prioritized sustainability by using local businesses for ingredients, flowers, and décor from nearby farms and producers. They also worked with local musicians, artists, and jewellers. Biodegradable confetti was used, and they avoided using balloons and sky lanterns.

Being in the heart of nature, the area emphasizes environmental care, which is important in Spain.

No campfires unless in a designated area (the palace has an indoor pool with a fireplace). Be sure to dispose of waste properly, and refrain from feeding the cows in the area.

What are your top tips for planning an elopement in Cantabria?

Planning an elopement in Cantabria, Spain, can be a magical experience. Here are some top tips to make it seamless:

Choose the right time of year

Cantabria’s weather is mild but can be unpredictable. May to September offers the most pleasant weather for outdoor ceremonies.

Pick a scenic location

Cantabria boasts stunning landscapes—consider coastal cliffs, the Picos de Europa mountains, or charming villages like Santillana del Mar for your ceremony.

Legal Requirements

Ensure you handle the paperwork in advance. If you’re not a resident, you may need to marry legally in your home country and have a symbolic ceremony in Spain.

Hire a local photographer

A local photographer like Rock and Love Weddings will know the best locations and lighting conditions to capture the beauty of the region.

Plan for accommodation

Cantabria has many boutique hotels, *casas rurales* (rural houses), and coastal retreats that can make for a perfect honeymoon spot right after the ceremony.

 Consider a local planner

A local wedding or elopement planner familiar with Cantabria can help arrange vendors, locations, and ensure the day runs smoothly.

 Incorporate local culture

Try incorporating Cantabrian traditions or cuisine into your day—enjoy local dishes like cocido montañés or fresh seafood by the coast.

What made the couple choose to get married in Cantabria?

They are both from Cantabria and have a passion for nature and history.

It was love at first sight. They found out about the location on social media and, upon visiting, loved that it is surrounded by mountains, nature, and historic decor. The palace perfectly reflected their tastes.

The palace was built in the seventeenth century, and its exquisite renovation earned it Relais & Châteaux status, the only one in Cantabria. Renowned interior designer Malales Martínez Canut led the restoration of Helguera Palace, converting it into a stunning hotel.

The bride is a well-known influencer and was inspired by the TV show *Bridgerton* for the decoration and her dress.
