Tuscany’s rolling hills, centuries old vineyards, a historic estate, this definitely sounds like a magical place for a wedding proposal!
When Brett got in touch with photographer Pasquale about proposing to his girlfriend Mariela, Pasquale suggested the hidden gem Badia a Coltibuono as the location.

How did you choose the location?

Pasquale: Badia a Coltibuono is one of my favorite hidden gems in the Chianti region. I suggested it to Brett because of its private, romantic atmosphere, surrounded by vineyards and Renaissance gardens. It has a timeless charm and feels completely secluded — ideal for an intimate moment like a proposal.

Do you require any special permits or permission from landowners to take photos here?

Pasquale: Yes, since Badia a Coltibuono is a private estate and active winery, I always reach out in advance to ask for permission and coordinate timing. They are usually very welcoming for small, respectful photo sessions like proposals or elopements.

How easy is the location to access? Is it suitable for all ages and abilities?

Pasquale: The location is accessible by car with a short walk from the main parking area. The garden paths are mostly flat and well maintained, making it suitable for most people — though not fully wheelchair accessible. It’s perfect for couples who want a peaceful, nature-filled setting without needing to hike or travel too far off the beaten path.

How did you approach capturing photos of the proposal and still keeping it a surprise?

Pasquale: I arrived early and coordinated with the staff at the location to make sure everything was set up in advance. The picnic was prepared by the team at Badia a Coltibuono, in a quiet, shaded corner of the garden. I stayed hidden with a long lens and captured the moment discreetly from a distance. Once Brett proposed and Mariela said yes, I stepped in and we continued with a relaxed portrait session.

Were there any other people involved in planning the proposal?

Pasquale: Brett worked directly with both me and the staff at the location. He handled the emotional side and the surprise, while the estate took care of the beautiful picnic setup. I assisted with timing, lighting, and the best route through the gardens to ensure the proposal flowed naturally.

What are your top tips for planning a proposal in this area?

Pasquale: Choose a private and romantic setting — Tuscany is full of vineyards, olive groves, and historic estates that feel like movie sets.

Work with local vendors or venues that can help you with special touches like wine, food, or floral decor.

Hire a photographer who knows how to blend into the background while still capturing the emotion and spontaneity of the moment.

Is there a best time of year to visit this location?

Pasquale: Spring (April–June) and early autumn (September–October) are ideal. The weather is mild, the gardens are lush, and the light is soft and golden — perfect for photography. Summer can also work well but tends to be warmer and more crowded.

Any other advice or tips you would like to share based on your experience?

Pasquale: Keep the moment focused on the couple and their connection. The beauty of Tuscany is already there — you don’t need to over-stage it. Also, make time after the proposal to just enjoy it — like Brett and Mariela did with their relaxed picnic. It gave them time to breathe, smile, and savor the moment before jumping into portraits.
