Not every country allows LGBTQIA+ weddings and sometimes that means eloping to another country to be able to officially tie the knot. That is what Belle and Deng decided to do since they are not able to get married in The Philippines. They chose Denmark as the location for their micro-wedding with 10 guests.

Why Did You Choose To Elope, and what made you choose Denmark?

Belle & Deng: It’s unavailable to us in the Philippines being a same sex couple. We had to get visas as our inquiries and applications would not be entertained without. Because of this we only had four months to plan. The guest list had to be very small

What Makes Helsingor Special for Elopements?

Ieva, the photographer: I love that it offers all the charm people associate with Denmark without the crowds of Copenhagen. Located only about an hour from Copenhagen by train, it’s an easy destination for international couples while feeling much more relaxed and intimate. The town is full of picturesque cobblestone streets, colorful historic buildings, and a beautiful waterfront that creates a timeless atmosphere. Being home to the iconic Kronborg Castle adds another layer of history and character. The Town Hall itself has a unique elegance that makes even a simple civil ceremony feel special, and there are countless beautiful locations within walking distance for portraits by the sea, in the old town, or around the castle grounds.

Did You Have A Civil (Legal) Ceremony, or A Symbolic Ceremony? Can You Get Legally Married in Denmark?

Yes, you can legally get married in Denmark as a non-citizen. Belle and Deng had a legal civil ceremony.

What Sustainability Considerations Were Made (if any) For This Elopement in Denmark?

Belle & Deng: We did not really plan to have major decorations, only flowers on the tables.

Did You Incorporate Aspects of the Local Culture into Your Wedding?

Belle & Deng: Yes. Our danish team told us of wedding customs like kissing on chairs for example.

Do You Recommend May For Getting Married in Helsingor?

Belle & Deng: It was the perfect weather that day! Yes, absolutely recommend it!

Ieva, the photographer: Every season offers something different, but late autumn and early winter are my personal favourites. The softer daylight, sea mist, and quieter streets create a cinematic atmosphere that’s difficult to find elsewhere. If you’re drawn to moody, romantic imagery, this is an incredible time to visit.

What Are the Best Tips for Planning an Elopement in Denmark?

Belle & Deng: Hire a planner separate from the wedding agency.

Ieva, the photographer: Many couples planning a destination wedding in Denmark focus exclusively on Copenhagen, but Helsingør is one of the country’s best-kept secrets. You can enjoy the same beautiful Danish architecture, easy accessibility, and welcoming atmosphere while experiencing a quieter and more relaxed setting. Since most of the town’s highlights are within walking distance, it’s easy to plan a stress-free wedding day without spending hours traveling between locations. I also recommend setting aside extra time after your ceremony to explore the harbour, the historic streets, and the coastline for portraits that showcase the town’s unique character.

How Did you Personalize your Wedding Day?

Belle & Deng: Lots of custom gifts for the guests! Table napkins embroidered with their name, tote bags filled with gifts and notes!

How much was your overall budget/spend for your wedding/elopement?

Belle & Deng: Around €30,000

When planning your budget, what were your priorities?

Belle & Deng: Food, travel & accommodation, and outfits.

What Challenges Did you Face While Planning your Elopement in Denmark, and How Did You Overcome Them?

Belle & Deng: Just availability mostly of the city halls were the hardest thing. I also think vendors don’t respond super quickly and that was very different for us coming from manila where event planning feels more fast paced.

What Advice Would you Give to Others Planning an Elopement in Denmark?

Belle & Deng: If you can get visas earlier, do it ahead of time.

Ieva, the photographer: Don’t let the season discourage you. Helsingør is beautiful throughout the year, and winter weddings can be especially magical. The dramatic coastline, historic architecture, and changing weather often create unforgettable photographs. I also recommend embracing the Danish atmosphere rather than worrying about perfect weather. Wind, mist, or even light rain often add character and make the experience feel even more authentic. Plan a relaxed timeline, wear comfortable shoes for walking through the old town, and allow yourself time to enjoy the day rather than rushing from one location to another.

What Were the Most Memorable Moments?

Belle & Deng: When our wedding party all walked together to the city hall, a passerby started singing to our group really beautifully. I was told Danish people love singing!

Why Is Denmark One of the Best Places to Get Married in Europe?

Belle & Deng: I don’t have experience in other countries but I hear paperwork isn’t so hard in Denmark.
