From Julie, the photographer: This Faroe Islands elopement was very unique because the couple had no idea what they’d be doing on their wedding day! While talking with them at the start of elopement planning, the couple mentioned that they love spontaneity and surprises but also the stability of having a plan. I had a crazy idea and pitched it — what if 90% of their wedding day was a surprise? They thought this was SO fun, and were totally up for it! I showed them a few location options to choose for their ceremony, and but the entire rest of the day was a mystery to them.
I carefully crafted their elopement with the scenery and activities I knew they would enjoy and and would show off the best of the Faroe Islands. I made sure they were prepared and had everything they needed for exploring, and they left the rest to me. They didn’t even know which islands they’d be visiting!
how did you choose the location?
The couple wanted fantastic views and quintessential Faroese scenery for their ceremony. I researched the islands and found a few great options for them to choose from.
No special permits were needed for any of them.
The couple chose to be legally married at home in the United States, so this was just a symbolic ceremony.
Like many locations in the Faroe Islands, the ceremony location did require a hike up a hill, although it was short. It wouldn’t be ideal for anyone with mobility issues.
What about sustainability for This elopement?
I always make sure myself and my clients follow Leave No Trace principles when out in nature and think about our impact when I’m suggesting activities and locations. I think about what the impact of being a tourist in the area is as well.
We stayed in the path of the trail at the ceremony location and followed the rules on signs posted nearby asking visitors to stay out of certain areas.
what are your top tips for planning an elopement in this area?
Look into the details of traveling to the Faroe Islands from your home country. It’s pretty easy if you’re in Europe, but it takes a bit more planning and extra flights if you’re coming from the United States. Also look at the temperatures and be sure you’re okay with wind, rain, and cool weather on your elopement day.
Summertime is the most green time on the islands, but the shoulder season (when this couple eloped) is lovely as well.
why did the Couple decide to elope and why in europe in particular?
The couple wanted to take a honeymoon trip through Europe and they thought it would be fun to get married somewhere along the way. It made sense to keep the guest list very small with it being a destination elopement, so they just invited the bride’s mom and groom’s brother.
They hadn’t visited Europe before, so they were excited to explore the area! They took a fun quiz online to see what travel destinations matched their style, and the Faroe Islands was one of the locations suggested.
