“The aim of this shoot was to inspire adventurous couples and demonstrate how unique and beautiful an Orkney elopement can be. By bringing together local suppliers and showcasing some of Hoy’s most iconic scenery, I hope to encourage more couples to consider eloping in Orkney and experience everything the islands have to offer.

Hoy is my favourite place in Orkney to photograph because of its dramatic landscapes, rugged coastline and breathtaking views. Despite being one of the most stunning locations in Scotland, it’s still relatively undiscovered as a wedding destination.”

What was the inspiration behind this styled shoot?

Kirstin: The inspiration behind this styled shoot was my love for Hoy, particularly the stunning landscape around Rackwick Bay. It’s one of my favourite places to photograph in Orkney, with its dramatic cliffs, rugged coastline, mountains and ever-changing light creating an incredible backdrop for couples.
I wanted to create a shoot that showcased just how beautiful and unique an elopement in Hoy can be, while highlighting the talent of local Orkney suppliers. As a wedding photographer, I’d love to see more couples choosing Hoy for their wedding or elopement, as I genuinely believe it’s one of the most breathtaking and underrated locations in Scotland.
The overall vision was romantic, adventurous and natural, allowing the landscape to take centre stage and inspire couples looking for a wedding experience that’s a little different from the traditional venue setting.

What do you love about this location?

Kirstin: What I love most about Rackwick Bay is how dramatic and untouched it feels. Every direction offers something different, from the mountains and sea cliffs to the beach and rolling hills. It has a real sense of adventure and freedom that’s hard to find anywhere else in Orkney.
As a photographer, the scenery is incredible in every season and weather condition. Whether it’s moody skies, golden evening light or mist rolling over the hills, the landscape always creates something special. It feels wild, romantic and completely unique.
I also love how peaceful it is. Couples can truly escape the world for a few hours and soak in the experience together without distractions. For me, it’s one of the most beautiful places in Scotland and the perfect setting for an intimate elopement or wedding day.

Your top tips for planning a destination wedding/elopement in this location?

Kirstin: 1. Embrace the weather-
Hoy is beautiful in all weather conditions, and some of the most magical elopement photos come from dramatic skies, sea mist and windswept landscapes. Don’t be afraid to lean into whatever the island gives you.
2. Avoid peak midge season if you can –
Hoy is covered in beautiful heather and, unfortunately, that can mean midges during the warmer months, particularly in August. They’re not always a problem, but if you’d rather not get eaten alive then I’d definitely consider other months.
3. Choose local suppliers who know the island well 📸
Having local suppliers can make planning much easier, from understanding ferry logistics to finding the best locations. As a local photographer, I love helping couples discover the hidden gems of Hoy and making the most of this incredible island for their elopement day.

When is the best time of day/year to plan a destination wedding/elopement in this location?

Kirstin: I’d personally say May/June or September/October

What advice would you give to others planning a destination wedding/elopement in this location?

Kirstin: My biggest piece of advice would be to check the tide times when planning your day, especially if you’re hoping to make the most of the beach and coastline around Rackwick Bay. I’d also recommend avoiding peak midge season if possible, as Hoy’s beautiful heather-covered landscape can attract quite a few of them during the warmer months.
Most importantly, don’t get too caught up in the details. One of the best things about eloping in Hoy is the incredible scenery and sense of adventure, so embrace the experience, go with the flow and enjoy every moment. Have the best day and make memories you’ll never forget.
