Joey and Kyle traveled from Texas to a bucket list destination to get married – Switzerland! They chose to hike to an incredible viewpoint to say their vows and soak it all in. With amazing views, farm animals, a butterfly landing on the dress, this elopement turned into a journey woven with nature’s quiet blessings, family’s presence in spirit and countless small moments of wonder. A celebration not only of their love, but of the beautiful truth that adventure and connection make the most timeless memories.

Why Did the Couple Choose Switzerland for Their Elopement?

Joey & Kyle: Switzerland had been at the top of our bucket list for some time now. We decided to elope in Appenzell due to its stunning natural beauty & jarring landscapes — it ended up being the perfect location. We had easy access to adventure and explore other areas in Switzerland, which were more fast-paced (Zurich, Lucerne, Grindelwald, etc) but were able to slow down and focus on the two of us in this more traditional, slower-paced region.

We decided to elope because we wanted to focus on what really matters — the two of us. With traditional weddings – it can be easy to let the commotion of the day take over what really matters, and we didn’t want the stress of that. We wanted to spend time together, just the two of us, doing something that we loved, exploring together in nature.

What Makes Appenzell Special for Elopements?

Traci, the planner & photographer: This location is so beautiful and gives you the best of both worlds – a vista view overlooking the amazing rock features and an alpine lake to enjoy with mountain features surrounding and towering over you. I love that there is also a mountain hut that you can stay in giving you the option to see sunrise and sunset at this beautiful location and spend more time in the area if you want. Truly, eloping here is not just about eloping in a beautiful place, it is about sharing an experinece together.

Can You Get Legally Married in Switzerland?

Yes, you can legally get married in Switzerland as a non citizen, but it requires a bit of paperwork. Joey and Kyle decided to have a symbolic ceremony and get the paperwork done at home in Texas.

What Sustainability Considerations Were Made (if any) For This Elopement in Switzerland?

Joey & Kyle: we followed the Leave No Trace rules.

What Was the Couple’s Experience with Getting Married in Switzerland During July?

Joey & Kyle: The weather was great (a little warm, but much more moderate than what we’re used to this time of year in Texas!), and the days were long, allowing us to pack a lot of adventure into our day.

Traci, the planner & photographer: We recommend sunset for the best lighting as far as what time of day to elope in the area. As for the best time of year, Joey + Kyle eloped in early July, and it was lovely as far as temperature, wild flowers blooming, and not having to navigate snow on the trails. However, you do have to worry about more storms that time of year. I think September here would also be quite perfect.

What Are the Best Tips for Planning an Elopement in Appenzell?

Joey & Kyle: Be flexible! The weather can change quickly in the mountains, so having a back up plan and being adaptable is important.
Also, probably most importantly, this is YOUR day! Spend time doing what you love even if it may not be what your family/friends would want or expect. How do you want to feel/remember this day five,10, 20, 50 years from now?

Traci, the planner & photographer: If you are hiking to the top of the range for sunrise or sunset, consider staying at the hut. If you are hiking to the lake for sunrise or sunset, consider staying at the hotel on the lake, Berggasthaus. Note that while there is a road that goes to the lake, it is for local use, and you will need to hike in. The trails in this area are steep, and in the higher elevations, there are huge drop-offs. Be realistic with your comfort levels when planning your exact location. My recommendation for any eloping couple is to work with an elopement photographer specifically that can help you in planning your dream day without any hiccups or stress.

How Did the Couple Personalize Their Elopement?

Joey & Kyle: We spent it doing something we loved together – hiking in a new and beautiful place!

What Challenges Did the Couple Face While Planning Their Elopement in Switzerland, and How Did They Overcome Them?

Joey & Kyle: None! Early on we had decided to use Adventure & Vow as our photographers, and they made our planning so simple and seamless! They helped us plan all aspects of our elopement — location scouting and guidance, visa/document requirements, accommodation recommendations, packing lists, back up plans, and so much more!
Traci & Bill were incredibly – they helped handle the planning so we could show up worry-free!

What Advice Would You Give to Others Planning an Elopement in Switzerland?

Joey & Kyle: – be prepared for changing weather conditions
– hiking poles were incredibly helpful (thanks for the rec, Traci!)
– plan to spend some extra time in the area to explore! This area is so unique and much more traditional than other areas of the country.

Traci, the photographer & planner: Be flexible if you are eloping in the Summer months with storms coming into the area. You want to avoid lighting in this area.

What Were the Most Memorable Moments from This Elopement?

Joey & Kyle: – we had our first look in the gardens of our hotel & it was drizzling — which was fun and made for some beautiful umbrella shots + is apparently good luck! It stopped once we began the hike & the sky cleared up just as we reached the top of the mountain for our ceremony! We ended the night with the most incredible, clear sky we have ever seen.
– walking through a traditional Swiss farm on our hike up to our ceremony spot – the amused farmer & his sweet (but cautious) sheepdog.
– we came across four horses on our hike down, which was really special for me (Joey). My dad passed away ten years ago & was very influential in my life – his career involved working with horses & he loved them. Coming across the horses felt like validation and love (perhaps a visit?) from him on our special day.

Why Is Switzerland One of the Best Places to Get Married in Europe?

Joey & Kyle: It is accessible but still feels wild and untouched.
We chose Schafler’s Ridge (& the area in general) because of its beauty – it is one of the most unique and jarring landscapes we had seen. Appenzell provided the perfect space for us to slow down and enjoy each other.
