Edinburgh, it is such a beautiful city and an amazing backdrop for your elopement or (intimate) wedding. Old architecture, yet still very close to nature. It’s the perfect combination. Kirsten and Scott picked this magical city for their Summer elopement and traveled from the US to Scotland to enjoy a beautiful honeymoon and say I do!
Why Did the Couple Choose Edinburgh for Their Elopement?
Kirsten & Scott: As teachers, we were drawn to the history and beauty of Scotland. (Sprinkling in the birthplace of golf added to the enjoyment). We wanted this next chapter to be just for the two of us, so an elopement seemed like the best place to begin our journey together. Our memories, our laughs, our words of commitment. Quiet and peaceful. We choose to elope to begin our next chapter as we started our journey; being just the two of us.
What Makes Edinburgh Special for Elopements?
Ieva, the photographer: Edinburgh is a gorgeous city with lots of beautiful old architecture and nature spots, we are definitely not short of great photo locations!
Can You Get Legally Married in Scotland?
You can get married in Scotland as a tourist.
Kirsten & Scott: We opted for a symbolic ceremony. We wanted a civil ceremony however the legality when returning to The States was overly complicated.

Did the Couple Incorporate Any Cultural Aspects of Scotland into Their Elopement?
Kirsten & Scott: We included a quaich and a toast with Whisky.
What Was the Couple’s Experience with Getting Married in Edinburgh During July?
Kirsten & Scott: We absolutely recommend it! But my guess is that Scotland is an ideal location anytime of year.
Ieva, the photographer: Edinburgh is an amazing place to elope to all year round, however I think it is particularly beautiful in autumn, such as October and early November, when the colourful autumn leaves blend perfectly with the dark academia vibes of the city. I would avoid some summer months, particularly August, when the Fringe festival doubles the city’s population (and the prices!).

What Are the Best Tips for Planning an Elopement in Edinburgh?
Kirsten & Scott: Finding the right photographer first. We had multiple locations in mind but when I stumbled upon our photographer’s stunning images our heart was set. Ieva Marija Brundson gave us guidance and inspiration. She helped us find a Humanist (Annalese Mcdermott) from the Scottish Humanist Society, as well as a florist (Aspen Florals). The rest fell into place.
Ieva: 1) If you are planning to elope outdoors, consider the weather and bring comfortable shoes to walk around (Edinburgh is very hilly) as well as extra layers, waterproof jackets and umbrellas as Scotland can surprise you with some wild weather even in summer!
2) Find an experienced local photographer who knows all the best locations in the city and can suggest a quiet spot to have the ceremony (if you’re eloping outdoors) as well as the best locations to take your photos.
3) Make sure you have a few extra days to spend in Edinburgh before or after your elopement. There is so much to see and do in the city, and it’s worth spending at least three days exploring it.
How Did the Couple Personalize Their Elopement?
Kirsten & Scott: As morning people, we were able to have the flexibility of a 9:00am ceremony which included sharing personal commitments and the sweet sounds of birds during our first dance.
What Challenges Did the Couple Face While Planning Their Elopement in Edinburgh, and How Did They Overcome Them?
Kirsten & Scott: Not a thing. We enjoyed our honeymoon for 8 days prior to our commitment ceremony (reversed the traditional order). This allowed us to fully embrace the culture, area, foods, and history of Edinburgh so when the day arrived (our last day in Scotland) it felt like home. There wasn’t a single hiccup, not even the weather. I think being open minded and willing to embrace anything for the goal of marrying someone you love is key.
What Advice Would the Couple Give to Others Planning an Elopement in Edinburgh?
Kirsten & Scott: Go for it. Leave the noise, family guilt and expectations behind. Seek out locals that care about your journey and are committed to their craft. Research the history and local culture but be true to yourselves. Plan well to be prepared to navigate obstacles so they don’t become challenges. Ultimately the only thing necessary for elopement success is your love for each other.
Ieva: If you are planning a destination elopement in Edinburgh, my first tip would be to decide whether you want an indoor or an outdoor ceremony. Some wedding venues in Edinburgh offer elopement packages so if you would prefer to have the ceremony indoors, you could book one of those. That being said, there are so many amazing public outdoor spaces where you can marry without any fees for the location hire but you have to be prepared for the weather as Scotland can be a little wild sometimes!

What Were the Most Memorable Moments from This Elopement?
Kirsten & Scott: Waking up to sunshine in the venue we were getting married at and having our first kiss as a married couple.
Why Did the You Choose This Venue And What makes it Perfect For an Elopement:
Kirsten & Scott: Our venue was a lovely flat found on VRBO in Stockbridge neighborhood with a sweet little private courtyard. We chose it for the convenience and privacy. The venue was a short walk to Circus Lane and Dean for pictures inspired by our photographer.
Do you need any permits or permission from landowners for this location?
Ieva: Most of the public spaces in Edinburgh do not require a permit to get married there, however there are some exceptions so it’s always better to double check with your celebrant or photographer. In this instance, the couple had their ceremony in the garden of the AirBnB where they were staying and I believe they got the permission from the accommodation owners to do this.
Why Is Scotland One of the Best Places to Get Married in Europe?
Kirsten & Scott: Scotland is romantic. It’s rugged and soft. Loving and adventurous. The people are generous and kind. We will forever hold Scotland in our heart.
