Kristen and Garrett traveled all the way from the United States to Iceland to celebrate their love in a private, intimate setting. A few months later, they planned to share this joy with their family and friends back home. They chose to prepare in a charming, cozy cabin before sharing a heartfelt first look amidst the blooming lupines outside. Next, they traveled to the iconic Reynisfjara black sand beach, where they took a series of portraits as puffins soared through the sky around us. The next stop was the famous “Yoda Cave,” aptly named for its striking resemblance to the iconic Star Wars character. As they prepared to leave, a few curious sheep stood watching, their gazes following the car as they drove away.
The next stop was the breathtaking Sólheimajökull glacier lagoon. In that breathtaking setting, they captured more unforgettable portraits with Lisa while immersing themselves in the serene beauty of the glacier. After a day spent enjoying the beauty of nature, they all drove to the final destination: a private waterfall. Here, Kristen and Garrett exchanged their vows in complete solitude, enveloped by the roar of the majestic cascade.
Why Did You Choose To Elope, and what made you choose Iceland?
Kristen & Garrett: After our first visit to Iceland the year prior we really loved the scenery and atmosphere Iceland provides! While we enjoy a traditional wedding we wanted the day to be private/for ourselves and to then come home and celebrate with our friends & family.
Iceland is ever changing and looking back now I’m so happy we got to have the experience we did. Some of our photo locations at Reynisfjara Beach are inaccessible now due to environmental factors. Be respectful of the land and the wildlife! Have fun and always remember it’s your only life, so live it!
What Makes Iceland Special for Elopements?
Lisa, the photographer: the ever-changing, dramatic landscapes.
Did You Have A Civil (Legal) Ceremony, or A Symbolic Ceremony? Can You Get Legally Married in Iceland?
Kristen & Garrett: we had a symbolic ceremony.
You can legally get married in Iceland as a non citizen.

What Sustainability Considerations Were Made (if any) For This Elopement in Iceland?
Kristen & Garrett: Luckily we had an amazing local team that helped ensure we did not have any negative impacts on the environment.
Do You Recommend July For Getting Married in Iceland?
Kristen & Garrett: Absolutely! Although it was being typical Iceland and the weather was ever changing it really was so beautiful to have a mix of moody weather.
Lisa, the photographer: The best time of year is Summer if you want longer days, Winter if you want a chance to see the norther lights.

What Are the Best Tips for Planning an Elopement in Iceland?
Kristen & Garrett: Know the time of year and weather you want to try to have when you’re there, picking a local vendor for pictures and videos made the most impact on our elopement! They knew the best spots, how to move with the weather and make the whole day so enjoyable!
Lisa, the photographer: Book with a local photographer, support local small businesses.
How Did you Personalize your Wedding Day?
Kristen & Garrett: We had personalized vow books and I included our dog’s paw prints in them along with a snip of their hair since they couldn’t physically be there. We also matched our outfits with the scenery for that time of year! I wore Hiking books (10/10 recommended ladies) and Garrett wore a mossy green suit!
How much was your overall budget for your elopement?
Kristen & Garrett: it was $15000.
When planning your budget, what were your priorities?
Kristen & Garrett: Photographer & videographer, then what we wore for the day were our two biggest priorities. My dress was from Kleinfeld in NYC ( fun fact: I was the first person to order my dress; it was brought in by the designers for a show that weekend ), and Garrett’s suit was custom-made for the day!
What Challenges Did you Face While Planning your Elopement in Iceland, and How Did You Overcome Them?
Kristen & Garrett: Yes! One thing your girl did not account for was a hairdryer…needless to say, after having a mini panic attack calling around to try to find one, Hotel Vik was so gracious and provided me with one to borrow for the night! I’m so grateful for them! Also, our steamer decided it was going to be a problem when we plugged it in, so check anything that needs electrical twice!
What Advice Would you give to Others Planning an Elopement in Iceland?
Kristen & Garrett: Pack accordingly, pick the time of year carefully, and I would absolutely recommend reaching out to our wonderful photographer, Lisa Digiglio. She was truly a pleasure to work with!
Lisa, the photographer: While Iceland’s landscapes are stunning, they can also be treacherous for those unfamiliar with the terrain. To ensure your safety while capturing the country’s beauty, I recommend booking with a local photographer. This not only provides you with their valuable expertise but also allows you to support a small local business.

What Were the Most Memorable Moments?
Kristen & Garrett: One of the most memorable moments for us was the start of the day! Meeting everyone and getting ready to start the adventure. Another one has to be running down Reynisfjara Beach in formal wear with a crew behind us taking pictures and videos. Everyone was so kind to us!
Why Is Iceland One of the Best Places to Get Married in Europe?
Kristen & Garrett: The land of fire and ice! You really get everything you’d ever want in Iceland. Icy caves, black sand beaches, massive waterfalls, canyons, volcanoes, puffins and so much more. Also being one of the safest places is a great plus. We really enjoy the culture and vibe Iceland always has.
