Tessa and Dante so badly wanted to do something that was completely out of the ordinary to those back home. Being from Belgium, not many people there know what an elopement is, so this was such a strange concept for them to go off and get married with just the two of them, without having a “fancy, show-off” wedding.

They wanted adventure, authenticity, and to spend this time with EACH OTHER, because they really felt that that’s how you should spend your wedding day. Tessa works for a travel company back home, and just loved the time she got to spend in Switzerland, so she knew it was the best location for the two of them.

Why Did the Couple Choose Switzerland for Their Elopement?

Tessa & Danté: We both love hiking and wanted to do something just for us. An Elopement was the perfect solution for Danté, who is a bit more introverted. The dramatic backdrop of the Swiss mountains just made it perfect.

We wanted our wedding to be more “us”—no seating charts, no stress, just the two of us, a beautiful spot, and all the love. Eloping felt like the perfect mix of romance, adventure, and skipping the awkward small talk with cousins we haven’t seen in 10 years.

What Makes Switzerland Special for Elopements?

Shawna, the photographer: You can still find beautiful and quiet places with the most gorgeous sunsets.

Can You Get Legally Married in Switzerland?

Tessa & Danté opted for a symbolic ceremony.

Did the Couple Incorporate Any Cultural Aspects into Their Elopement?

Tessa & Danté: Yes! On one of our first dates 11 years ago, we shared a big portion of Belgian fries—so of course, we had them again right before our ceremony.

What Was the Couple’s Experience with Getting Married in Switzerland During July?

Tessa & Danté:  The weather was perfect and the mountain huts were still nice and quiet—ideal for an elopement!

Shawna, the photographer: The best time of year is July/August, because otherwise some of the areas we went to would have too much snow and the huts would be closed.

What Are the Best Tips for Planning an Elopement in Switzerland?

Tessa & Danté: Get a photographer who knows the area! We had Shawna with us—she’d been there before, knew all the best spots, and honestly made everything stress-free. Total game-changer!

Shawna, the photographer: Finding a planner/photographer who knows the area is key, and researching lots of blogs if you’ve never been.

How Did the Couple Personalize Their Elopement?

Tessa & Danté: We personalized our day by incorporating meaningful moments, like exchanging handwritten vows in the Swiss Alps, and creating a small ceremony just for the two of us. We also made sure to take a quiet hike afterward, soaking in the beauty of nature and the significance of the day.

What Advice Would the Couple Give to Others Planning an Elopement in Switzerland?

Tessa & Danté: hire a local photographer who knows the area, as they can really help you find the best spots and make your day stress-free!

What Were the Most Memorable Moments from This Elopement?

Tessa & Danté: One of the most memorable moments was definitely the “wreck the dress” moment in the lake! It was so much fun to let loose and splash around in the water.

Why Is Switzerland One of the Best Places to Get Married in Europe?

Tessa & Danté: We picked Switzerland because… have you seen those views?! It was dreamy, peaceful, and felt like our own little movie moment. Just the two of us, nature, and a lot of happy tears. Best decision ever!
