Keira and Matt’s first holiday together was to The Isle of Skye. With Keira having Scottish roots, having their micro wedding on this island made perfect sense! With it’s stunning and dramatic landscapes, the Isle of Skye is a gorgeous location to bring your guests and say I do!

Why Did the Couple Choose The Isle Of Skye for Their Elopement?

Keira & Matt: Our first holiday together was to Skye, we absolutely love it there. The scenery is very dramatic and we liked the idea of getting married with a small group of our closest friends and family. We initially were looking into having a large traditional wedding, however through this process both of us realised that we weren’t interested in all the fuss, and just wanted our nearest and dearest there on the day. We had 16 guests.

What Makes The Isle of Skye Special for Elopements?

Oli & Steph, the photographers: Quiraing is one of the most dramatic and cinematic landscapes on the Isle of Skye, a place that truly feels otherworldly. Towering cliffs, sweeping views over Staffin Bay, and moss-covered rock formations make it feel both wild and intimate. What we love most is how it changes with the weather; whether shrouded in mist or glowing at golden hour, it always feels magical and deeply connected to nature. It’s the kind of place where couples can feel completely immersed in the landscape — just the two of them, surrounded by silence and beauty.

Can You Get Legally Married in Scotland?

Yes, you can. Keira & Matt had a civil ceremony.

What Sustainability Considerations Were Made (if any) For This Elopement On The Isle of Skye?

Keira & Matt: We made sure to leave no trace of our ceremony. We made our own picnic and ensured all litter was cleared away and brought home with us. We also used organic confetti. We aimed to source as much as possible from local vendors.

Did the Couple Incorporate Any Cultural Aspects of Scotland into Their Elopement?

Keira & Matt: Yes, Keira is Scottish so we wanted to incorporate traditional Scottish wedding elements such as hand fasting and drinking from the quaich. We also had a piper play at the wedding.

What Was the Couple’s Experience with Getting Married On The Isle of Skye During July?

Keira & Matt: Although the island can be busy with tourists in the summer months, Oli and Steph were able to arrange a location and time for our wedding that offered us almost complete solitude, allowing us to have an intimate ceremony.

Oli and Steph: The best time of year is May through September, when the days are long and the hills are at their greenest. That said, April and October can also be incredible for softer light and fewer tourists. The best time of day is sunrise, when the light hits the cliffs beautifully and the landscape feels peaceful and private.

What Are the Best Tips for Planning an Elopement On The Isle of Skye?

Keira & Matt: Trust Oli and Steph’s guidance and advice regarding local vendors. Also make sure to book well in advance, and plan for all weathers. We cannot recommend Oli and Steph enough. We couldn’t have organised such a good day without them. Their local knowledge and guidance was invaluable.

Oli and Steph: Arrive at least two days before your wedding date: Skye’s roads and weather can be unpredictable, so it’s best to build in some buffer time. Plus you don’t want to be exhausted when you arrive.
Dress for the elements: Bring sturdy footwear and layers, the terrain can be uneven and the weather changes quickly.
Plan your timing carefully: Early morning or evening light creates the most beautiful atmosphere and helps avoid crowds, as it’s a really popular location.
Hire local suppliers: From celebrants to florists, working with people who know the island ensures a smoother, more sustainable experience.
Have a backup plan: If conditions are wild, there are sheltered or lower-level spots nearby that still feel just as epic.

How Did the Couple Personalize Their Elopement?

Keira & Matt: We provided the bridesmaids with shawls in their family tartans. We wrote our own vows. We made our own picnic, during which speeches were read. Keira’s mum made the wedding cake.

What Challenges Did the Couple Face While Planning Their Elopement in Scotland, and How Did They Overcome Them?

Keira & Matt: We organised the wedding with limited build up time, and due to the remote location of Skye we had to act fast to book our vendors. Organising our evening meal was a bit of a stress, however the Cuillin Hills Hotel which we eventually went with was fantastic, accommodating our every need.

What Advice Would You Give to Others Planning an Elopement On The Isle of Skye?

Keira & Matt: There may be elements of the day which don’t go exactly to plan, so be prepared to roll with it if there are a few curve balls. Wear thermal leggings under your wedding dress!

Oli and Steph: Embrace the adventure and the unpredictability of Scottish weather. It’s part of what makes the experience so memorable. Be flexible with your plans, trust your photographer and celebrant to guide you on the day, and focus on being present with each other rather than chasing perfection. Skye rewards couples who go with the flow; some of the most beautiful moments happen in between the plans.

What Were the Most Memorable Moments from This Elopement?

Keira & Matt: A few funny mishaps – the hand fasting didn’t work first time and the whiskey we brought for the quaich wouldn’t open as the lid broke, resulting in my brother opening it in an unconventional manner. Watching Keira walk into the ceremony with the beautiful scenery as a backdrop and the piper playing was unforgettable. A white tailed sea eagle appeared immediately after our ceremony and circled overhead for a while.

Why Is The Isle Of Skye One of the Best Places to Get Married in Europe?

Keira & Matt: The scenery is absolutely stunning, with a rugged and remote feel. The local food and hospitality is amazing.
