A wonderful, sunny, relaxing day, no fuss, just us and our vows” describes Marit. “In a beautiful garden of our hotel we made our vows to each other”.
Then the couple went to explore the downtown of Sicilian capital, Palermo. A city of southern charm and history, a home to beautiful mix of architecture and unique Italian vibe. They were walking, taking photos and enjoying their “Aperol Sprits” just outside, receiving warm greetings from tourists and visitors .
“We really enjoyed every moment together which was the most important thing on our wedding day”
10 years ago Marit and Serge’ met at work (they are both from the Netherlands) and it was love at first sight. Marit moved 100 km to be with Serge’ every day. They both share a great passion for city trips and tropical holidays. “When Sergé proposed me in beautiful Portofino, we immediately agreed that we wanted to get married in Italy, but where?” – says Marit.
They dreamed of going to Sicily and decided to hold their elopement in a completely unknown city, in order to combine a new holiday destination and their wedding.
Why Did the Couple Choose Sicily for Their Elopement?
Marit & Sergé: We both really love (sun) holidays and had not yet visited Sicily, which we both really wanted to do. We started to explore the island and ended up in Palermo. We choose to elope because we wanted our wedding to be intimate. It was everything we wanted in to be. By eloping you have nobody to care of but eachother, which was perfect for us. Of course we had a party at home for family and friends, but we will cherish the moments together in Palermo forever.
What Makes This Sicily Special for Elopements?
Marit & Sergé: Marit calls every city that we visited the city of love
… the lovely people, the wonderful climate, the coundless delicious restaurants, but also the rough edge of the city make it unforgetable for us!
Anna, the photographer: It’s authenticity, captivating history, culture , energy , it’s truly Sicilian vibe – all around feels alive.

What Are the Best Tips for Planning an Elopement in Sicily?
Marit & Sergé: Start planning on time, hand it over to a wedding planner and don’t worry too much about the details. Have faith!
Anna, the photographer: Choose the right time of the year – perfectly from April to November, decide on the venue – if you love architecture and city vibe, there are lots of options to stay within the city. Nature lovers could opt for the sea or mountain view vanue. Also I’d advise to work with local vendors – planners, photographers, florists and MUAH. They know the territory and would give you the best advise. Keep in mind the language barrier so choose the vendors who speak English. Embrace Sicilian rythm – slow and relaxed, perfect to enjoy your day! Hire a local planner who will advise on the best options and put you in contact with local vendors who know the territory. Trust the professionals you hired.
Valentina, the planner: Choose the Perfect Backdrop for Your Ceremony, Embrace Sicilian Culture in planning and details, Plan for an Authentic Sicilian Experience.
How Did the Couple Personalize Their Elopement?
Marit & Sergé: It was just about the two of us, we got ready and had breakfast together and were able to read our vows to each other with love. No guests, just us. Have your complete focus on each other. After the ceremony we went into town for our photo shoot and enjoyed all the enthusiastic Italians cheering us on.
What Challenges Did the Couple Face While Planning Their Elopement in Italy, and How Did They Overcome Them?
Marit & Sergé: We didn’t face challenges, but you must have confidence in the wedding planner (Valentina) and photographer (Anna) and keep in good contact with them. She knows the area and the culture and you can share your ideas with her. They made the wedding absolute worthwhile.

What Were the Most Memorable Moments from This Elopement?
