When you live in Australia but just cannot find the perfect venue for your wedding there but dream of eloping in Positano? You make that dream happen! That is exactly what Chrissy and Paul did. They decided on the gorgeous Villa Magia as their venue for an intimate, stylish elopement that fits in perfectly on the Amalfi Coast.
What made you choose Villa Magia for your wedding?
From Chrissy, the bride: After months or researching locations in Australia I couldn’t find a venue that felt special & the right fit for us. I was dreaming of an overseas elopement, so that the venue would feel as special & memorable as the day would be. A destination wedding seemed like a crazy idea that we would never go through with. We had a shortlist of Aussie venues but had been looking at some absolute dream locations for inspiration on styling. We were having trouble deciding so I said to my husband-to-be “If it was completely up to you, and money & family opinions did not matter, what would your dream location be?” He showed me a photo of a Positano wedding I had shown him prior and he said this would be the dream. So I said “Okay! Let’s make it happen!” It’s our big day, and we will never get another chance to get married again so let’s make it a dream come true!
Once we had decided on Positano, I did a lot of research of all the different villas within our budget, Villa Magia had the most wonderful reviews and the best opportunities for stunning photos. They have so many stunning areas for photos inside & out and they treated us like royalty!
Do you require any special permits or permission from landowners to get married or have a photoshoot at Villa Magia?
Our elopement package at Villa Magia allowed us to use any area on their property for photos and we could pick from a few different areas for our ceremony & reception. We chose their terrace which overlooks the ocean for our reception. We had our cake cutting in our private garden terrace & dinner was served in an area of our suite which had the grandest windows with a stunning view!
Can you have a legal ceremony at Villa Magia, or just symbolic?
We had a legal religious marriage ceremony back home in Australia a week before we left. We didn’t want to add any extra stress to the big day & holiday by needing to organise the paperwork overseas and making sure that it would be recognised in Australia.
How easy is Villa Magia to access? Is it suitable for all ages and abilities?
Positano is the city of steps! The whole town is full of tiny narrow stairs and steep hills. A reasonable level of fitness definitely helps to navigate through the town and to the villas. To reach Villa Magia you must walk down some stairs to reach their property, but their lovely staff are willing to escort you & carry your bags down too!
What are your top tips for planning an elopement in Positano?
Definitely get in early because there are a limited number of local vendors around and it is a very popular destination for weddings! The staff at our villa were wonderful and were able to help with planning and suggestions for locals who they work with. The language barrier made it a bit harder to organise things but contacting everyone by email worked well, I just had to be patient in waiting for responses.
It is a very busy town in the Summer! We chose to have our wedding before peak season in the hope that the crowds would be smaller and the vendors would have more availability! The weather turned out to be absolutely perfect.
How did you meet?
We met when I was in high school & Paul was just starting University. We were both into photography and Paul saw the cityscape photos that I was posting online and was impressed! We met shortly after that to take photos and we have been by eachothers side ever since! Photos mean a great deal to us and that is part of the reason we chose to elope in such a beautiful place and spent a lot of time researching the perfect photographer to document our day.
Why did you decide to elope?
We wanted to take the stress and pressure out of the day so we could focus on eachother. Eloping meant a lot less organisation, and that our budget could be spent on building the perfect and most memorable wedding day (and honeymoon) rather than paying for a large venue in Sydney. We invited only our parents and spent a week before the wedding enjoying Italy together as a family which was amazing. We know we made the right decision and wouldn’t have done it any other way!
What made you choose Europe, and Positano in Particular?
To us, Europe is an absolute fairytale. It is so rich in history and has stunning architecture. The Italian coast is so beautiful, and so colourful it resembles a postcard! Having incredible photos to immortalise the memory was our main goal, and choosing such a photogenic town made every backdrop perfection. Bright colours and charm was important to us both and we couldn’t find that in Sydney! The food and hospitality in Italy was incredible. Every single building and view in Positano is absolutely stunning so we knew we didn’t need to overstyle or plan too much because it is simply beautiful on it’s own! We were planning to honeymoon through Europe so it made sense to get married while we were over there!
Any other advice or tips you would like to share based on your experience?
I think it is really important to build your wedding or elopement around you & your partners dreams. It is one of the most important and symbolic days of your lives and it it should reflect your personality and love for eachother. Too many couples feel pressure from family and friends to uphold traditions and meet expectations. We chose to follow our hearts and bring only our parents with, and they supported our decision every step of the way.
