Michael had been planning the proposal for weeks ahead of their trip to Scotland. The couple were travelling with Dessie’s mum, and he wanted the whole thing to feel incredibly special and intimate. With a bit of gentle guidance from their photographer, Roma, they settled on sunrise at Calton Hill to avoid the usual busy crowds and honestly, it couldn’t have been more perfect. The light was soft, the city was still waking up, and Dessie said a huge, happy yes!

We asked both photographer Roma and the happy couple some questions about this once in a lifetime moment.

Who chose the location? How easy is the location to access? Is it quiet or crowded?

Roma: Michael had a clear idea he wanted to propose at Calton Hill in Edinburgh, it’s a brilliant spot that overlooks the whole city. It’s very easy to access, just a short walk, the main issue is with it being such a popular location for tourists in the capital, it is always crowded. You do not need any permits for this location.

How did you approach capturing photos of the proposal and still keeping it a surprise?

Roma: Understandably Michael was keen to avoid crowds so my advice was that we would need to do it as the sun came up which Michael was definitely up for! I did worry poor Dessie was getting dragged out in the dark and possible rain and wouldn’t know why but luckily she is equally as adventurous and fun. I set off just after 5am to be on site for 6.30am so I could pick my spot to hide. I dressed down with my cameras hidden so I just fitted in with the early morning walkers. Plus I make a brilliant rock blending in with the scenery.

What are your top tips for planning a proposal in this area?

Roma: If you are looking to have a proposal in Edinburgh and want to avoid lots of crowds then you will need to be up with the sun. Edinburgh is stunning in all seasons, I like it the most though in the autumn due to the colours.

Any other advice or tips you would like to share based on your experience?

Roma: Lots of communication with your couple prior, I kept in touch with Michael and even on the morning whatsapped him to let him know I was on location, proposals are stressful enough I think for people so I believe in trying to take as much of that stress and nerves away as possible.

Why did you choose this location to propose?

Michael: The views were beautiful and it was a short walk from the area we were staying.

Was the proposal a surprise?

Michael: Yes she was not expecting it.

What were the biggest challenges you faced planning a proposal abroad?

Michael: Finding a photographer a week before the proposal!

What advice would you give to others thinking of planning a proposal in this location?

Michael: Go early because there aren’t many visitors then.

What advice would you give to others planning a proposal abroad?

Michael: Plan early and if you book a photographer try to plan time to rehearse the proposal with them in person so the angles are perfect.

Did you already have a ring? Was it a surprise or did you buy it together?

Michael: I already bought the ring.

Any fun stories you’d like to share about the proposal?

Michael: We loved having Dessie’s mother there. She knew about the proposal and watching her in our video was so funny because she was trying to be inconspicuous.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?

Michael: If you are in Scotland definitely book with our photographer, Roma! She was the best!
