The Rialto Bridge in Venice has to be one of the most iconic bridges in the world. When you say Venice, this is one of the locations you immediately think of. Niall surprised Ella by proposing right here, because to him it felt like the most characteristic choice in Venice. The proposal took place at sunrise, taking advantage of the fact that Venice is still empty and quiet at that time and the light is still soft.
CB Photographer Venice was at the scene to document THE moment and take portraits of them as a newly engaged couple.
Who chose the location? You or the couple?
Carlo, the photographer: It was a collaborative choice. The client wanted an iconic Venetian landmark, and I suggested the Rialto Bridge area because of its architectural beauty and the unique perspective it offers at dawn.
Do you require any special permits or permission from landowners to take photos here?
Carlo: No special permits are required for the public areas around Rialto, but a deep knowledge of the city is essential to find the exact spots that offer the best angles without obstructions.
How easy is the location to access? Is it quiet or crowded?
Carlo: The location is very central and easy to access, but timing is everything. While it is one of the most crowded places in the world during the day, shooting at sunrise allows us to enjoy a rare, quiet, and intimate atmosphere that makes the proposal much more magical.
How did you approach capturing photos of the proposal and still keeping it a surprise?
Carlo: we acted as tourists taking landscape photos. We stayed at a distance using a long lens, blending into the morning light. This allowed the couple to have their moment in total privacy while I captured the raw, authentic emotions without being noticed.
Were there any other people involved in planning the proposal?
Carlo: I worked closely with the partner via WhatsApp in the days leading up to the event, sharing GPS coordinates and photos of the exact spot to ensure everything went perfectly according to plan.
What are your top tips for planning a proposal in this area?
Carlo:
My number one tip is “embrace the dawn.” The light reflecting off the Grand Canal at sunrise is incomparable. Also, trust your photographer’s advice on the exact positioning—a few inches can make the difference between a good shot and a masterpiece with the Rialto Bridge perfectly framed.
Is there a best time of year to visit this location?
Carlo: Spring and early Autumn are wonderful for the soft light. However, winter sunrises in Venice have a unique, misty charm that adds a layer of mystery and romance to the photos.
