This beautiful intimate elopement took place in the Westfjords of Iceland, one of the most remote and enchanting areas in the country. Mackenzie and Robbie came all the way from Canada to celebrate their love. They got ready in a gorgeous house from 1906 in a little village of Flateyri, followed by traditional pagan Ásatrú ceremony and some adventuring after. The weather was really moody, it rained most of the time but it didn’t prevent them from having the most unique experience, exploring desolate Icelandic landscapes in the midnight sun.
Why Did the Couple Choose Iceland for Their Elopement?
From Mackenzie & Robbie: Iceland has been on our bucket list for a long time, and we knew that the dramatic landscapes would make for amazing photos – which they did!
We celebrated our fifteenth anniversary the year we eloped. After being together for such a long time, planning a huge stressful wedding just didn’t make much sense to us. We decided we would rather celebrate with a bucket-list adventure, for just the two of us.

What Sustainability Considerations Were Made (if any) For This Elopement in Iceland?
From Mackenzie & Robbie: We tried to be conscious of our impact throughout the day, and during our trip in general. When spending time in wild places, it’s important to follow leave-no-trace practices in order to avoid damaging such delicate ecosystems. Don’t step on the moss!
Did the Couple Incorporate Any Cultural Aspects of Iceland into Their Elopement?
From Mackenzie & Robbie: Yes, we had an Ásatrúarfélagið ceremony, performed with a modern twist by Haukur Bragason. He included a stanza from Hávamál in his speech, we read our vows while holding an oath ring, and we drank mead from a traditional horn.
What Was the Couple’s Experience with Getting Married in Iceland During the month of June?
From Mackenzie & Robbie: If we were to do it again, we would probably wait at least a few more weeks. Late June can still be pretty chilly in Iceland!
From Daria & Hjalti, the photographers: Summer, particularly mid-June is the best time of year. All the roads will be accessible and you’ll get to experience midnight sun, when the sun barely sets below the horizon and it doesn’t get dark.
What Are the Best Tips for Planning an Elopement in Iceland?
From Mackenzie & Robbie: Book everything as far in advance as possible. Accommodation and vendors book up quickly in the summer.
From Daria & Hjalti, the photographers: It takes about 7 hours by car to get to the Westfjords from Reykjavik, so it’s always a good idea to stay in the area at least for 3 nights, so that you have a backup day in case the weather does not cooperate.
How Did the Couple Personalize Their Elopement?
From Mackenzie & Robbie: We personalized our wedding day by spending it exploring an amazing place, creating once-in-a-lifetime memories together. Although the actual planning phase was full of ups and downs, the day itself was completely stress-free and allowed us to focus on the ceremony, and being together.
What Challenges Did the Couple Face While Planning Their Elopement in Iceland, and How Did They Overcome Them?
From Mackenzie & Robbie: The Westfjords are beautiful, but planning an event from abroad, in such a remote area does add another layer of complexity. Daria and Hjalti’s intimate knowledge of the area was invaluable in this process.
What Advice Would the Couple Give to Others Planning an Elopement in Iceland?
From Mackenzie & Robbie: Again, booking everything in advance is very important. As is finding vendors with local expertise. Definitely plan to rent a car, and bring warm layers – even in summer!
From Daria & Hjalti: Make sure to hire a local photographer! There are so many hidden gems in the Westfjords that only locals who’ve had enough time to explore the region will know about.
What Were the Most Memorable Moments from This Elopement?

– The first look.
– Robbie dumping the mead in the sand – which was part of the ceremony – and splashing Mackenzie’s dress.
– Taking a break to dry Robbie’s suit jacket on a radiator, after getting soaked by rain during the ceremony.
– Rounding a corner on the way to Dynjandi waterfall, and being overwhelmed by how huge it was.
